Imagine boarding a metro train in Meerut and travelling to the opposite end of the city in 30 minutes, including all stops. No honking. No traffic. There will be no tension. Just speed. That is exactly what India awoke to on February 22, 2026, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Meerut Metro at Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station, establishing the country’s fastest metro system ever.
This is more than just another ribbon cutting. This marks a new era in India’s progress.

A Record That Stood for Years — Now Broken
For a long period, the Delhi Airport Express Line was India’s fastest metro route, reaching speeds of 110 km per hour. But Meerut Metro simply stepped in and won the title, with a top operational speed of 120 kmph.
On paper, ten extra miles per hour may not seem like much. However, at this scale, it translates to significantly shorter travel times, less waiting, and a more pleasant daily experience for thousands of commuters.
21 Kilometres. 12 Stations. 30 Minutes.
The Meerut Metro follows a 21-kilometre track from Meerut South to Modipuram, stopping at 12 stations along the way. The full voyage, including stops at each station, lasts around 30 minutes.
Daily commuters, office workers, students, and traders all stand to benefit from this shift.
The Track-Sharing Idea That India Has Never Tried Before
This is where things get genuinely intriguing. The Meerut Metro does not have its own dedicated tracks. It uses the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat trains, India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
This is the country’s first fully integrated transit scheme. Namo Bharat provides intercity travel at speeds of up to 180 kmph, linking locations like as Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut to Delhi. The Meerut Metro, on the other hand, manages intra-city traffic on the same corridor.
The end product is a seamless two-in-one system. You can go from Delhi to Meerut via Namo Bharat and then transfer to the Metro for local stops — all inside the same integrated infrastructure.
Trains Built to Turn Heads
The metro trains deserve a mention. Alstom manufactures these stainless-steel trainsets at its plant in Savli, Vadodara. They are lightweight and modern, with a maximum speed of 135 kmph while operating at 120 kmph. They have a striking brilliant green, blue, and orange colour scheme that makes them easily identifiable.
Each trainset can seat up to 700 passengers and is designed to handle high daily usage without breaking a sweat.
The Bigger Picture — Delhi to Meerut, Finally Complete
PM Modi also dedicated the entire 82-kilometer Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, including the recently completed 5-kilometer segment between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi. Sarai Kale Khan is currently a fully operational multimodal hub that connects Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, Delhi Metro’s Pink Line and a large interstate bus terminal.
The event revealed development projects worth around ₹12,930 crore, indicating a considerable investment in Meerut’s future growth.
What This Means for Meerut
Meerut is the fifth city in Uttar Pradesh to join the metro network, following Lucknow, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, and Kanpur. The metro is projected to reduce traffic congestion and automotive carbon dioxide emissions around the city.
The service will be owned and operated by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which already controls Namo Bharat, providing operational consistency between the two systems.
A City That Refused to Wait Anymore
Meerut has traditionally been recognised for its hustling, including sports products, scissors, sugarcane fields, and a fast-paced trading environment. It now has a metro to match its intensity.
At 120 kilometres per hour, the Meerut Metro is not just the fastest in India. It is a statement that even little cities deserve world-class infrastructure. Meerut has recently received exactly that.
