Solar Energy in India: 7 Massive Changes Shaping India’s Future

Ten years ago, solar energy in India barely registered as a rounding error on India’s electricity grid. Today, it has grown fiftyfold, and the story isn’t just about bigger numbers. It’s about seven distinct shifts happening at once, in manufacturing, farming, pricing, and policy, all reshaping what the Indian solar industry actually looks like heading into the next decade.

Change 1: India Overtakes the US in Annual Additions

Change 2: The Manufacturing Mandate Nobody Saw Coming

On 1 June 2026, a rule took effect that exposed just how thin India’s solar supply chain really is beneath the surface. Government backed and net metered projects must now use domestically made solar cells, not just modules, India enforced ALMM List-II rules on 1 June 2026 mandating domestically manufactured solar cells for government-backed and net-metered projects. MNRE has already signaled this pressure will climb further upstream, with rules for ingots and wafers arriving by 2028, ALMM List-III extending domestic sourcing requirements to ingots and wafers is set to take effect 1 June 2028. Change 3: Solar Energy In India: Transforming Rooftops

The PM Surya Ghar scheme has quietly become one of the fastest growing household energy programs anywhere in the world. Daily installations jumped from roughly 5,038 to nearly 16,328 in under a year for solar energy in India, PM Surya Ghar installations accelerated from 5,038 per day in October 2025 to 16,328 per day by July 2026, a 3.2x increase.

What started as a subsidy scheme is starting to look like a genuine shift in how ordinary Indian households generate and consume power.

Change 4: Solar Energy In India Just Got Absurdly Cheap

Numbers rarely tell a cleaner story than this one. Compare that to ₹4.63 per unit, considered a landmark low back in 2015, and the price of solar has effectively halved in a decade. Cheap solar changes everything downstream of it, from household bills to how utilities plan future capacity.

Changes 5, 6 & 7: Farms, Factories, and the Bigger Picture

Three more shifts round out the picture, each less flashy than the headline numbers but arguably just as important. Under PM-KUSUM, over 21.77 lakh farmers have already benefited from solar pumps and decentralized plants, more than 21.77 lakh farmers had benefited from PM-KUSUM as of December 2025 across solar pumps and grid-connected components.

Diesel irrigation can cost farmers over ₹8,000 per acre for crops like cotton, and solar pumps cut that significantly, solar pumps can save farmers between ₹5,000 to 6,500 per acre annually compared to diesel irrigation. A planned Agri-PV component could push farmer earnings past ₹1 lakh per acre by stacking crop revenue with electricity income.

Manufacturing is reaching for global ambitions too. A new facility in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, will produce 6 GW of solar cells and 5 GW of modules, explicitly designed to strengthen India’s export capacity, a new manufacturing facility in Jewar is designed to produce 6 GW of solar cells and 5 GW of solar modules to strengthen India’s export capabilities Source.
