India’s First Dumbbell-Shaped Roundabout: Mohali’s High-Tech Traffic Fix

India’s First Dumbbell-Shaped Roundabout: Mohali’s High-Tech Traffic Fix

Envision a road that makes decisions for you. You are aware that navigating the congested crossroads close to Sohana Gurdwara is a test of patience rather than just a commute. This location has long been a nightmare for Mohali inhabitants because to the sea of devotees, high airport traffic, and crisscrossing automobiles.

However, the wait for a more comfortable ride is nearly over. This busy intersection will have India’s first dumbbell-shaped roundabout by August 2026. It is a clever feat of civil engineering that was created to transform one of the city’s most hazardous locations into a model of efficiency and safety. It is more than simply a peculiar moniker.

What Is a Dumbbell Roundabout?

It appears just as its name implies at first glance. This design has two smaller circular junctions joined by a central corridor rather than a single large circle. It forms an extended, elegant shape that resembles the familiar gym equipment.

For high-traffic areas, this particular geometry is revolutionary. This design employs physics to control speed, in contrast to conventional four-way junctions that rely on lights. The road is safer without the need for continuous braking because the curves are designed to compel cars to slow down naturally.

Why Sohana Gurdwara Was Chosen

Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan’s surroundings are distinct. Thousands of pedestrians, including many elderly and young people, visit this spiritual center. In addition, it is situated on the PR-7 Airport Road, an important thoroughfare for the whole Tricity area.

Combining vulnerable pedestrians with large, swift-moving automobiles is typically a prescription for disaster. The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) realised that a typical traffic light was insufficient. They required a design that put humans before pure vehicle speed.

A Sanctuary for Pedestrians

The designated refuge island is one of this project’s best features. It has always been risky for visitors to the Gurdwara to cross the large road. Pedestrians can pass in two different stages because to the innovative dumbbell design.

When the next lane is clear, you can stroll to the middle island, wait in a safe area, and finish the crossing. For the elderly, it is a huge benefit because it eliminates the stress of having to run through six lanes of traffic at once.

Cutting Down the Fatalities

Because this design essentially prevents the “T-bone” accident, safety experts are very thrilled. A high-speed side-impact collision might result from a driver jumping a red light in a typical junction. Every vehicle travels in the same general direction when using a dumbbell roundabout.

The angles involved make the impact much milder, even if there is a slight bump. According to officials, this arrangement greatly lowers the risk of fatal injuries. It transforms a high-risk area into a “calm traffic” setting where errors don’t result in catastrophes.

Keeping the Wheels Turning

When there is no traffic on the other side, nobody enjoys spending three minutes at a red light. Continuous movement is made possible by the dumbbell shape. Vehicle idling time is decreased since they can navigate the curves without stopping completely.

Both the environment and your gasoline tank will benefit greatly from this. Lower emissions and a speedier travel to the airport are the results of less stop-and-go traffic. The regular journey will be far quicker, even if traffic signals may still be needed to control large crowds during religious holidays.

The Countdown to August

The project is expected to be completed by August, and construction is already well underway. The Sohana intersection is the focal point of a bigger effort to update Airport Road.

Infrastructure such as this raises the bar for Indian urban planning as Mohali develops into a tech and transit hub. It is a daring move that will make our streets safer, smarter, and much less stressful for all.
