Himachal Pradesh Partners With Alliance Air for Daily Flights Between Delhi, Shimla, and Dharamshala
Imagine breathing in the fresh, pine-scented air of the Himalayas after a brief, picturesque flight from the muggy hustle of Delhi. For many years, travelling to the “Queen of Hills” or the spiritual center of Dharamshala required lengthy, winding road travels that tried one’s stomach and patience. As the mountains get closer to the capital, all of that is about to alter.

A New Chapter in Mountain Travel
With the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Alliance Air, Himachal Pradesh has formally made a significant step toward modernisation. The goal of this strategic agreement is to create a dependable and continuous aviation corridor. The state is making a strong statement by starting daily flights: the hills are no longer “too far” for a quick business trip or weekend break.
Two vital routes that have long served as the foundation of the state’s tourism industry are the focus of the agreement. The first connects Delhi and Shimla directly, while the second links Dharamshala’s tranquil surroundings with Shimla, the state capital. The most well-liked hubs are now smoothly integrated thanks to this dual-route approach.
Strengthening Regional Connectivity
The state’s Director of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Vivek Bhatia, emphasised that the primary goal of this action is to improve regional connectivity. Air transport in the area was irregular and frequently cancelled for a long time. The goal of this new agreement is to increase schedule regularity and consistency so that travellers may confidently plan their trips.
The government hopes to lessen the heavy reliance on road travel by establishing a direct air link between these famous hill stations and the nation’s capital. In addition to saving travellers time, this lessens the strain on the small mountain roads, which frequently experience traffic during the busiest summer and winter months.
The Fleet and the Experience
The specialised ATR 42-600 aircraft will be used for the flights. Because of its capacity to manage shorter runways and the particular wind conditions present in high-altitude airports like Jubbarhatti and Gaggal, this particular model is a favourite for regional operations. It provides a comfortable and secure flying experience over the peaks with 48 seats.
The last week of April 2026 is when commercial operations are expected to start. This date is ideal since it coincides with the start of summer, when thousands of people leave the plains to avoid the heat. Many people will find it easy to choose a one-hour fly over an eight-hour journey.
Financial Backing and Sustainability
The financial basis of this agreement is what makes it so intriguing. The government of Himachal Pradesh has pledged to provide 100% Viability Gap Funding (VGF). In essence, the state is serving as a safety net by covering all of Alliance Air’s costs as a “Grant-in-Aid” to keep the flights running even in hard times.
This project is expected to cost ₹32.64 crore a year. The government’s expectation that the long-term economic benefits—driven by greater tourism and local business growth—will greatly outweigh the initial expenses is reflected in this significant investment. As of right now, the MoU is good for a full year after the flights begin.
Boosting the Local Economy
This agreement serves as a lifeline for local companies in addition to being convenient for tourists. In Shimla and Dharamshala, hoteliers, tour companies, and local craftspeople anticipate an increase in high-value tourists. Longer stays and more expenditure are frequently the results of improved accessibility, which benefits the nearby mountain villages.
For intra-state travel, the Shimla-Dharamshala stretch is revolutionary. It used to be a tiresome day-long trip to go between these two important hubs. It will now be a short hop, enabling travellers to enjoy the Tibetan influence of Dharamshala and the colonial elegance of Shimla on the same trip without getting tired.
