The horizon of the National Capital Region has officially shifted. On a historic Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened Phase I of the Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh. This infrastructure project, worth ₹11,200 crore, demonstrates India’s growing aviation ambitions.
The Prime Minister walked through the gleaming new terminal, and the atmosphere was electric. This project marks the establishment of a second international gateway for Delhi NCR, which will work in tandem with the Indira Gandhi International Airport to transform Northern India into a global transit hub.

A New Chapter for Viksit Bharat
During the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the airport as a “new chapter” for the country. He emphasised that this facility is a key component of the Viksit Bharat campaign. By establishing a world-class hub in Jewar, the government is signalling that Uttar Pradesh is more than just a state of heritage, but also a state of rapid development.
The Prime Minister’s vision encompasses more than just flights. He emphasised how the airport would serve as a catalyst for the youth, farmers, and small businesses in Western Uttar Pradesh. It is a project designed to bridge the gap between local aspirations and global opportunities.
Capacity and Massive Scale
Phase I of this greenfield marvel is designed to impress. With an initial investment of around ₹11,200 crore, the airport can now handle 12 million passengers annually. However, this is just the beginning. The master plan allows for a staggering scalability of up to 70 million passengers per year as future phases are implemented.
The infrastructure includes a huge 3,900-meter runway. This length is critical because it enables the airport to handle large, wide-body aircraft used for long-distance international flights. Jewar is ready for a quick hop to a neighbouring state or a direct flight to Europe.
Solving the Congestion Crisis
For many years, the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has carried the heavy burden of being the region’s only international entry point. With IGI’s slots nearly exhausted, the Noida International Airport serves as a much-needed relief valve.
These two airports will manage the increasing number of travellers as part of an integrated aviation system. This “twin-airport” model is similar to major global hubs such as London and New York, allowing the National Capital Region to continue to grow without being stifled by traffic congestion.
A Technological and Cultural Blend
The Noida International Airport stands out because of its distinctive design. The architecture is deeply rooted in Indian culture, with inspiration taken from traditional ghats and havelis. It gives travellers a sense of place from the moment they step off a plane.
Technically speaking, it is a “smart” airport. It has advanced navigation systems such as the Instrument Landing System (ILS), which ensures that operations run smoothly even during the infamous North Indian winter fog. Furthermore, it is designed to have zero emissions, making it a pioneer in sustainable aviation.
The Logistics and Cargo Powerhouse
While passengers are the airport’s visible face, the cargo ecosystem powers it silently. The project consists of a multi-modal cargo hub with an integrated terminal. It will initially handle 2.5 lakh metric tonnes and is expected to grow to 18 lakh metric tonnes in the future.
This emphasis on logistics will transform the Yamuna Motorway corridor into a thriving manufacturing and export hub. A 40-acre Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility has also been inaugurated, ensuring that aircraft can be serviced in India, saving millions of rupees in foreign exchange.
Connecting the Region
The airport’s strategic location along the Yamuna Motorway ensures that it serves more than just Noida. It will primarily benefit districts such as Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, and Faridabad. With planned integrations for metro, rail, and high-speed road networks, millions of people will be able to travel to the airport with ease.
