By improving the connection to Silchar, the project gives these states a faster route to the rest of India. This is a key component of the “Act East” policy, which aims to transform the Northeast into a thriving trading hub with Southeast Asia.
Engineering Against The Odds
Building a high-speed corridor through this terrain is an engineering feat. The region is known for its fragile geology and torrential monsoon rains. To ensure safety, the project will incorporate a variety of modern structures.
Planners have included 18 major bridges and over 150 minor ones to help people navigate the waterways. In addition, dozens of viaducts and overpasses will maintain the highway’s “access-controlled” nature, keeping local traffic separate from high-speed transit.

Beyond jobs, the motorway will benefit Meghalaya’s industries. The state is a leading producer of cement and coal. Because of faster, more reliable transportation, these goods can reach markets throughout India at a lower cost and in less time.
