PM Modi Set to Inaugurate Final Leg of Delhi–Meerut RRTS and Meerut Metro on 22nd February

The landscape of the National Capital Region is about to change forever. For years, the dream of a seamless, high-speed connection between Delhi’s heart and Meerut’s historic streets seemed out of reach. That vision has now become a reality. On February 22, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the final stretch of the Namo Bharat corridor. This isn’t just any ordinary rail opening; it marks the completion of a massive 82-kilometer engineering marvel that promises to shrink the map of North India.

A New Era of Speed

The operationalisation of the remaining segments of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) will be the event’s centrepiece. The focus is on the 21-kilometer stretch from Meerut South to Modipuram, as well as the 5-kilometer link between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi. When the Prime Minister flags off these trains, the entire corridor will be fully operational. Imagine travelling from the bustling hub of Sarai Kale Khan to the northern outskirts of Meerut in under an hour.

Meerut Joins the Metro Club

However, the story is not just about long-distance travel. The Meerut Metro was officially launched on the same day, February 22nd. Meerut will be the seventh city in Uttar Pradesh to get its own metro system. What truly distinguishes this project is its “shared infrastructure” model. In a first for India, the Namo Bharat rapid trains and the local Meerut Metro will use the same tracks. This clever design allows commuters to transition between city and regional travel without leaving the platform.

Modern Stations and Local Connectivity

The Meerut Metro is designed to meet the specific needs of the city’s residents. While Namo Bharat trains only stop at major hubs, the Metro will connect 13 local stations along a 23-kilometer route. These include densely populated and commercial areas such as Begumpul, Partapur, and Rithani. The stations are designed with safety and accessibility in mind, with Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) to prevent accidents and keep even the busiest hours manageable and safe for all.

Changing the Commuter’s Life

For the average commuter, this launch is a life-changing event. The days of enduring the soul-crushing traffic on the Delhi-Meerut Motorway or relying on unpredictable bus schedules are coming to an end. These semi-high-speed trains can reach speeds of 160 kilometres per hour, making them the fastest regional trains in the country. With trains running every 10 to 15 minutes, the “waiting time” that plagues public transport users will be a thing of the past.

Boosting the Regional Economy

Beyond simply getting from point A to point B, the completion of this corridor serves as a massive economic engine. We are already seeing the “Metro Effect” in real estate prices in Ghaziabad and Meerut. New townships, such as the one planned for Mohiuddinpur, are emerging to capitalise on this connectivity. Businesses can now consider Meerut as a viable extension of the Delhi office space, allowing professionals to live in a more peaceful city while working in the capital.

A Tech-Forward Experience

The trains themselves are a symbol of “Make in India” success. They provide a premium experience that rivals international standards, featuring ergonomic seating, Wi-Fi, luggage racks, and dedicated wheelchair spaces. The entire 82-kilometer corridor is monitored from a high-tech control center in Duhai, ensuring that punctuality—which has been at 99% in previous phases—remains the gold standard for the network.

The Grand Celebration

The inauguration on February 22nd is expected to be a grand event, with the Prime Minister addressing a public rally. As the final concrete pillars are polished and the stations are decorated with flowers, Meerut’s pride is palpable. This project is more than just tracks and steel; it symbolises a “New India” that values time, efficiency, and world-class infrastructure for all of its citizens.
