Paradip Port to Get Rs 797 Crore Green Hydrogen Jetty: A Clean Energy Revolution

Imagine a future in which the massive ships that dock at our shores are not only carrying cargo, but also powered by the cleanest fuel known to man. That vision is being realised right now in Odisha. The maritime world is abuzz with the news that Paradip Port will become a primary gateway for India’s green energy ambitions.

A dedicated green hydrogen jetty, costing Rs 797 crore, is poised to transform eastern India’s logistics landscape. This is more than just a construction project; it’s a declaration of intent. India is no longer simply participating in the global energy transition; it is driving it from the front.

The Power of Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen is the “fuel of the future,” created by splitting water with renewable energy. Unlike traditional fuels, it emits nothing but water vapour. However, creating it is only half the battle. To truly change the world, we need a way to transport it across oceans.

This is where Paradip Port enters the scene. The new Rs 797 crore facility is designed specifically for green hydrogen, ammonia, and other liquid cargoes. By establishing a specialised terminal, India ensures that green energy produced in Odisha’s industrial clusters can reach international markets efficiently.

Boosting India’s Maritime Strength

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways recently approved this ambitious project. It will be developed using a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. This model ensures that the best of private expertise meets public vision, resulting in a world-class facility that will withstand the test of time.

The Paradip Port Authority is not a bystander in this transaction. They are providing capital support of approximately Rs 159.43 crore, or 20% of the total project cost. This skin in the game demonstrates how committed the local authorities are to achieving success within the next 24 months.

Technical Prowess at 4 MTPA

Let’s talk numbers. The new jetty will have a staggering handling capacity of 4.0 million tonnes per year (MTPA). This is a massive amount of liquid energy passing through a single point. To handle this, the infrastructure consists of advanced storage systems and a network of specialised pipelines.

Engineers designed the jetty with a dredged depth of 14.3 metres. This is critical because it allows large liquid cargo ships to dock safely without the risk of running aground. This design is optimised for speed, safety, and high-volume throughput at every level.

Creating A Green Ecosystem

The project is a key component of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. By positioning Paradip as a hub, the government is attracting massive investments to Odisha. When a port has the infrastructure to export clean fuel, industries that produce it will naturally want to locate nearby.

This creates a “cluster effect,” resulting in new factories, specialised transportation services, and thousands of jobs for local youth. It is an economic engine powered by the cleanest energy source available today. The ripple effects will be felt throughout India’s eastern corridor.

Flexibility for the Future

One of the most intelligent aspects of this Rs 797 crore plan is its adaptability. While the ultimate goal is green hydrogen, the jetty can also handle other liquid cargoes. This keeps the terminal busy and profitable even as the green hydrogen market continues to grow.

This “dual-capability” approach minimises risk while maximising utility. It means that Paradip Port will remain a dominant player in the maritime sector, no matter how quickly the global energy mix changes. It exemplifies future-proofing.

A Landmark for Odisha

For Odisha, this is more than just infrastructure; it’s a badge of pride. Under the current administration, the state is transforming into a global leader in sustainable logistics. This project combines local production with global demand, firmly establishing Odisha on the international energy map.
