Mumbai Metro 9: First Phase of Mira-Bhayandar to Dahisar Nears Clearance to Cut Traffic Soon

Imagine a world in which your morning commute from Mira-Bhayandar does not involve staring at the taillights of a thousand cars on the Western Express Highway (WEH). For years, this stretch of road has been a test of patience, a bottleneck that turns short trips into hour-long sagas. But the wait for relief is finally over.

The first phase of Mumbai Metro 9, the long-awaited extension of the Red Line, is about to be officially launched. With trial runs completed and safety clearances in the final stages, the northern suburbs are about to witness a transport revolution that will alter the way Mumbai residents travel.

Bridging the Suburban Gap

Mumbai Metro 9 is more than just another rail line; it is a vital lifeline that will connect the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) to the heart of Mumbai. This 11.38-kilometer corridor extends the existing Metro Line 7 (Andheri East to Dahisar East).

By extending the metro network northward, the project provides commuters with a smooth transition. You will soon be able to board a train in the heart of Mira-Bhayandar and travel all the way to Gundavali in Andheri, or even take an interchange to the airport, without ever having to cross the congested road.

The First Phase Rollout

The first phase focuses on the critical 4.5-kilometer stretch connecting Dahisar East and Kashigaon. This is the most advanced segment, with nearly all construction completed and stations ready to welcome the first wave of passengers.

Dahisar East, Pandurang Wadi, Miragaon, and Kashigaon are among the stations that are important during this initial phase. These hubs are strategically located to serve the most densely populated residential areas, offering a high-speed alternative to the ageing and frequently overcrowded suburban railway and bus services.

Cutting the WEH Congestion

One of the most significant benefits of this project is the expected impact on the Western Express Highway. Currently, the WEH handles millions of vehicles per day, with the Dahisar Toll Naka serving as a permanent choke point for those entering or exiting the city.

Officials and urban planners predict that the operational Mumbai Metro 9 will cut road travel time by 50-75%. For Mira Road residents, a journey to Andheri that currently takes 90 minutes during peak hours could soon be reduced to just under 50 minutes.

A Masterpiece of Engineering

This line’s innovative design distinguishes it from others. Parts of Mumbai Metro 9 are constructed using a “double-decker” structure. This means that the metro tracks run on an elevated tier, with a new road flyover on the level below, all within the same pillar framework.

This design is a masterpiece for Mumbai’s space-starved landscape. It increases both rail and road capacity along the same narrow corridor, maximising land utility while minimising construction footprint.

Final Safety Hurdles

As of March 2026, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) had completed a thorough inspection of the Dahisar-Kashigaon route. While the infrastructure is largely complete, the authorities are currently implementing minor technical improvements recommended by the safety audit.

The Chief Minister has already directed the MMRDA to start preparing for a grand inauguration. The goal is to ensure that every signalling system, escalator, and safety sensor are perfectly calibrated before the first commuter swipes their smart card.

Beyond the First Phase

While the focus is currently on Kashigaon, the rest of the queue is closely following. The second phase will take the tracks deeper into the heart of Bhayandar, stopping at stations such as Sai Baba Nagar, Meditiya Nagar, and the Subhash Chandra Bose Stadium.

Once the entire corridor is operational, it will be linked to Metro Line 10 (Gaimukh to Shivaji Chowk) and the upcoming Metro Line 7A, which connects to the international airport. This results in a massive, interconnected grid that facilitates suburban travel.

Transforming Local Life

The metro’s arrival is also stimulating the local economy. Real estate demand in the Dahisar-Mira-Bhayandar belt has increased, with property values reflecting the improved connectivity.

For the average professional, it translates to more time at home and less time in traffic. For the city, it means a greener, faster, and more efficient way to keep Mumbai moving forward.
