MMRDA Achieves First Tunnel Breakthrough for Mumbai Metro Line 7A

This achievement marks the completion of the first underground tunnel constructed by MMRDA in the city’s network.

Project Overview

Mumbai Metro Line 7A is a 3.4-kilometer extension of the existing Line 7, which currently operates between Dahisar East and Gundavali in Andheri East. Of the total length, 2.5 kilometers are underground, and 0.94 kilometers are elevated. The line will feature two stations: an elevated station at Airport Colony and an underground station at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 2.

The TBM ‘Disha’ completed a 1.647-kilometer tunnel between Andheri East and CSMIA. This tunnel, with a finished diameter of 6.35 meters, was constructed using a dual-mode hard rock TBM. The project faced challenging geological conditions, including a sharp gradient and minimal overburden clearance, without major.

Once operational, Line 7A will provide direct connectivity from Dahisar East to CSMIA, offering seamless interchanges with Metro Lines 1, 6, and 9. This integration is expected to significantly reduce travel time by up to 60 minutes for commuters traveling from Mira-Bhayandar in the north and Colaba in the south to the airport .​

As of now, over 52% of the construction work on Line 7A has been completed. The line is anticipated to be operational by December 2026. To facilitate the project, 200 hutments were resettled, and a sewer line was diverted. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, present at the breakthrough ceremony, highlighted the project’s.
