The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has made a but progressed significant milestone with the first tunnel breakthrough on Metro Line 7A, connecting a 1.6-km stretch to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, significance in enhancing Mumbai’s metro infrastructure and connectivity.
On April 17, 2025, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) celebrated a significant milestone with the successful breakthrough of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Disha’ on Mumbai Metro Line 7A. This achievement marks the completion of the first underground tunnel constructed by MMRDA in the city’s network.
Project Overview
Mumbai Metro Line 7A is a 3.4-kilometer extension of the existing Line 7, which currently operates between Dahisar East and Gundavali in Andheri East. Of the total length, 2.5 kilometers are underground, and 0.94 kilometers are elevated. The line will feature two stations: an elevated station at Airport Colony and an underground station at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) Terminal 2.
The TBM ‘Disha’ completed a 1.647-kilometer tunnel between Andheri East and CSMIA. This tunnel, with a finished diameter of 6.35 meters, was constructed using a dual-mode hard rock TBM. The project faced challenging geological conditions, including a sharp gradient and minimal overburden clearance, without major.
Once operational, Line 7A will provide direct connectivity from Dahisar East to CSMIA, offering seamless interchanges with Metro Lines 1, 6, and 9. This integration is expected to significantly reduce travel time by up to 60 minutes for commuters traveling from Mira-Bhayandar in the north and Colaba in the south to the airport .
As of now, over 52% of the construction work on Line 7A has been completed. The line is anticipated to be operational by December 2026. To facilitate the project, 200 hutments were resettled, and a sewer line was diverted. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, present at the breakthrough ceremony, highlighted the project’s.
This milestone underscores MMRDA’s commitment to expanding Mumbai’s metro disruptions overcoming engineering challenges. network, aiming to reach 100 kilometers of metro lines by next year. The successful completion of this tunnel sets a precedent for future underground metro projects in the city
On April 17, 2025, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) marked a significant milestone in the city’s metro expansion with the successful breakthrough of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Disha’ on Metro Line This achievement represents MMRDA’s first completed underground tunnel.
Mumbai Metro Line 7A is a 3.4-kilometer extension of the existing Line 7, which runs from Dahisar East to Gundavli. The extension includes a 2.5-kilometer underground section and a 0.94-kilometer elevated stretch. It will feature two stations: an elevated station at Airport Colony and an underground station at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
TBM ‘Disha’ completed a 1.647-kilometer downline tunnel between Andheri East and CSMIA. The tunnel, with a finished diameter of 6.35 meters, was constructed using a dual-mode hard rock TBM. The tunneling work commenced in September 2023 and navigated several engineering challenges, such as passing beneath Metro Line 3.
Once operational, Line 7A will provide direct connectivity from Dahisar East to CSMIA, offering seamless interchanges with Metro Lines 1, 6, and 9. This integration is expected to significantly reduce travel time by up to 60 minutes for commuters traveling from Mira-Bhayandar in the north and Colaba in the south to the airport.
As of now, approximately 59% of the construction work on Line 7A has been completed. The line is anticipated to be operational by December 2026. An additional breakthrough on the parallel upline tunnel is expected in the coming month, further advancing MMRDA’s efforts in underground metro construction.
