Eicher Trucks and Buses Launches India’s First 13.5m Electric Intercity Sleeper

Imagine waking up in a foreign city after travelling through the night in complete silence. There’s no engine roar or fuel fumes—only the smooth, quiet glide of an electric motor. This isn’t a pipe dream; it’s the new normal on Indian highways.

Eicher Trucks and Buses has reached a significant milestone by delivering its first 13.5m electric intercity sleeper bus. This move is about more than simply a new vehicle; it is about transforming how millions of Indians travel between states.

A New Chapter in Green Travel

The delivery of this first unit represents a significant shift for the Volvo-Eicher joint venture. While electric buses have proven popular in cities for short commutes, diesel has long dominated the intercity market.

Eicher’s introduction of a 13.5-meter sleeper variation demonstrates that long-distance travel may be both sustainable and luxurious. The Skyline Pro E variant is specifically engineered to withstand the rigours of Indian highways while leaving no carbon footprint.

Partnership with LeafyBus

The first of these innovative buses was supplied as part of a strategic collaboration with LeafyBus, a pioneer in long-distance electric mobility. LeafyBus has pledged to deploy 100 of these electric sleepers within the next 18 months.

The first phase will include 35 buses on the road by March 2026. These will fly on high-traffic routes such as Delhi-Dehradun and Delhi-Lucknow, offering a cleaner option for frequent travellers.

Powerful Performance Under the Hood

Don’t let the “electric” tag fool you into believing it’s powerless. The Skyline Pro E 13.5m is a beast built for long hauls. It is fitted with a gigantic 400 kWh LFP battery pack, allowing it to travel long distances on a single charge.

A 235 kW permanent magnet motor provides fast torque to power this massive machine. This ensures smoother overtakes and stable speed even when the bus is packed with passengers and luggage.

Passenger Comfort: The Sleeper Experience

For the passengers, the most evident difference is the silence. Without a rumbling diesel engine, the cabin is extremely silent, allowing for a far deeper sleep on overnight excursions.

Spacious Interiors

The bus has a 36+D layout, which means it can carry 36 passengers in a mix of upper and lower berths. The 13.5-meter length adds legroom and cabin space, which makes a significant impact on an 8-hour voyage.

Smooth Ride Quality

Air suspension in the front and rear improves safety and comfort. This design absorbs the bumps from uneven Indian roadways, keeping the berths firm as you sleep.

Strategic Infrastructure and Leasing

Scaling up an electric fleet involves more than just vehicles. The relationship is supported by Enetra EV, which manages the lease and financing of these vehicles. This asset-light concept enables operators such as LeafyBus to scale quickly.

Furthermore, Eicher and LeafyBus are working together on charging infrastructure. High-capacity fast chargers are being installed strategically along highways to keep turnaround times to a minimum.

Safety First on the Highway

Driving a large truck at fast speeds necessitates top-tier safety technology. Eicher hasn’t cut any corners here. The bus has innovative braking systems and energy-efficient components that maximise range without compromising safety.

The LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery technology utilised is also known for its thermal stability, making it a safer option for the varied temperature conditions present throughout the Indian subcontinent.

Paving the Way for Zero-Emission Highways

This delivery sends a strong message to the industry: the era of diesel dominance is over. As the government works toward Net Zero by 2070, technologies like the 13.5m electric sleeper are critical.

The success of these first few routes is likely to spark a domino effect, aided by cheaper operating costs for owners and a superior passenger experience. It benefits both the environment and the economy.
