Atal Setu: 5 facts about India’s longest sea bridge ever constructed

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), commonly referred to as the Atal Setu, is India’s longest sea bridge. It is 21.8 km in length, of which 16.5 km are over the water and the remaining 5.5 km are on land.

wonder of engineering

With features that guarantee commuter safety and efficiency, the Atal Setu is a masterpiece of contemporary engineering. The entire length has a ventilation system and an emergency escape route, ready to handle any unforeseen emergencies. Additionally, the bridge is built to support two-way traffic movement.

The bridge bears the name of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a former Indian prime minister renowned for his foresight and guidance. ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu’ is the official name. The much-awaited Atal Setu was formally opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12, 2024. This was a major turning point in the development of India’s infrastructure and provided comfort to people whose trip plans were hampered by bad weather or heavy traffic.

Environmental sustainability was given a priority throughout the Atal Setu’s development. The accomplishments of the initiative were also recognised with a certificate of appreciation from the prestigious environmental institution, the Bombay Natural History Society. In order to reduce noise and vibrations that can endanger marine life, precautions were made.

less distance to go

Faster access to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport is now possible thanks to the Atal Setu. It also shortens the travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and South India. Furthermore, it has improved the link between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port. The Mumbai Metropolitan Area is anticipated to have substantial economic growth as a result of the Atal Setu. The bridge will help with trade, business, and general economic activity since it will shorten travel times and provide communication between important locations.
