The landscape of Indian industry is changing, and it is becoming a unique shade of green. In a historic move for the manufacturing sector, AM/NS India has become the country’s first integrated steel company to acquire the government’s Green Steel Certification. This is more than simply a corporate milestone; it signals to the world market that India is prepared to lead the low-carbon revolution.
This certification falls within the Ministry of Steel’s recently established Green Steel Taxonomy, a stringent framework for categorising and promoting sustainable production. By meeting this high standard, the joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel has cemented its place at the forefront of industrial decarbonisation.

Understanding The New Taxonomy
The government’s new taxonomy is a complex ranking system that ranks steel according to its carbon intensity. To be eligible for the “Green” badge, a facility must emit less than 2.2 tonnes of $CO_2$ equivalent per tonne of produced steel. It’s a difficult threshold that distinguishes the pioneers from the rest of the herd.
Under this approach, the National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) conducts thorough checks before assigning star ratings. A 5-star certification demands emissions of less than 1.6 tonnes, whilst 4-star and 3-star ratings cover emissions up to 2.2 tonnes. This openness provides purchasers with a verifiable indicator to assess the environmental impact of their supply chain.
The Star-Studded Portfolio
AM/NS India did more than merely pass the test; they excelled. The company’s Hot Rolled (HR) coils and sheets received a renowned 4-star grade, ranking among the cleanest industrial products available in India today. Meanwhile, their Cold Rolled (CR) coils and sheets received a strong three-star grade.
These products are the lifeblood of critical sectors. From the automobiles we drive to the infrastructure that connects our cities, the availability of certified green steel allows downstream businesses to dramatically reduce their Scope 3 emissions. This is a huge victory for automakers and construction companies working for their own net-zero goals.
The Technology Behind the Transformation
How did AM/NS India outperform its peers? The secret is a purposeful move away from old, coal-intensive processes. Approximately 65% of the company’s capacity now uses the Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) approach, which is fuelled by natural gas rather than coking coal.
This technological shift has enabled the company to reduce its carbon intensity by more than 35% since 2015. By incorporating natural gas and boosting the utilisation of steel waste, the Hazira-based facility has established a new standard for large-scale, integrated steel production.
A Renewable Energy Backbone
Sustainability is more than simply the furnace; it also includes the fuel. AM/NS India is supported by a significant increase in renewable energy procurement. A 1 GW hybrid renewable energy facility in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, is already providing clean power to their main activities.
Looking ahead, the corporation is doubling down on its current strategy. Plans are already in place to grow renewable capacity to 2 GW, with an expenditure of roughly $0.9 billion. This green power system is what will eventually propel their products to the coveted 5-star certification.
Impact on Global Competitiveness
As the globe progresses toward mechanisms such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), having government-verified green certification provides a strategic advantage. It keeps Indian steel competitive in international markets where carbon footprints are progressively taxed.
By being the first to move, AM/NS India is shaping a market rather than simply following a policy. They have already begun commercial manufacturing of these certified materials, providing local and international consumers with a reliable, audited alternative to standard high-carbon steel.
Driving the National Mission
This achievement is precisely aligned with India’s overall climate goals and the vision of a ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. It demonstrates that heavy industries may flourish without harming the environment. As more companies adopt the “Green Steel” badge, it is likely to become the industry’s new standard.
With a goal of reducing emissions intensity by 20% by 2030 compared to a 2021 baseline, the company is demonstrating that the future of steel is more than just strength—it is about sustainability. The era of green steel has finally begun, with Hazira.
