Andhra Pradesh is poised to gain a 318-kilometer-long expressway connecting Kurnool in AP and Solapur in Maharashtra. The project will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India, and it will also connect the Chennai-Solapur economic corridor as part of the Union government’s major Bharatmala project. The huge highway would connect AP, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra and is expected to open in 2025.
Once connected to the Chennai economic corridor, it will significantly increase connection from industrial centres in south India to the western section of the country. When the expressway opens, the distance between Kurnool and Solapur will be decreased by around 100 kilometres. Currently, trucks must drive through Nalgonda and Hyderabad to reach Solapur from Kurnool, but once the expressway is completed, vehicles will be able to travel through Mahbubnagar and Kosgi in Telangana and Raichur in Karnataka. It is one of the 23 priority projects undertaken by the NHAI across the country as part of the Bharatmala initiative, and the road-building agency has requested tenders for the creation of a complete project report. The project is expected to be finished by 2025.
