PM Narendra Modi Unveils ₹1,704 Crore NH-66 Stretch: A New Era for Kerala’s Infrastructure

The landscape of Northern Kerala has recently undergone a massive high-speed upgrade. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the 39-kilometer, six-lane stretch of National Highway 66, a significant step toward improving India’s coastal connectivity. This isn’t just another road; it’s a modern engineering marvel that connects Thalappady and Chengala, changing the way people cross the state border.

The atmosphere at the inauguration was electric, marking a watershed moment for the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Economic Corridor. This project exemplifies India’s vision of self-reliance, combining world-class infrastructure with local expertise. This stretch is poised to become the region’s new lifeline for trade and tourism, reducing travel time and alleviating Kasaragod’s notorious traffic congestion.

The Power of Local Expertise

The construction team behind the ₹1,704 crore project is impressive. The construction was carried out by the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS). For those familiar with Kerala’s industrial landscape, the name ULCCS is synonymous with quality. They were the only Kerala-based cooperative awarded a contract for the massive NH-66 expansion project.

While many national and international powerhouses are frequently the faces of such mega-projects, ULCCS demonstrated that local talent can outperform the best. Their employees demonstrated unrivalled dedication, completing the project with a level of precision that earned them national recognition. It’s a proud moment for the cooperative sector, demonstrating how grassroots organisations can handle complex engineering with ease.

Engineering Feats and Fast Tracks

What can ₹1,704 crore buy? In this case, the highway appears to belong in a futuristic city. The Thalappady-Chengala stretch includes the country’s longest single-pillar six-lane bridge, built with a sophisticated box girder system. This 1.12-kilometer-long flyover in Kasaragod is a sight to behold, serving as a symbol of modern design.

Speed was essential in this situation. Construction began in late 2021, and the team completed key milestones ahead of schedule. Despite the challenges of Kerala’s geography and heavy monsoons, the project was 99% complete by mid-2025. It serves as a model for how large-scale infrastructure should be managed efficiently while maintaining the highest level of safety.

Nature and Progress Hand in Hand

Infrastructure is frequently associated with environmental degradation, but this project told a different story. The developers went above and beyond to protect the local biodiversity. When a 40-year-old mango tree stood in the way of progress, they did not simply cut it down. Instead, they grew 500 grafted saplings and replanted them, ensuring the tree’s legacy would live on.

Perhaps the most heartwarming story from the construction site was the “Python Pause,” when workers discovered python eggs in one section and halted work for nearly 55 days. The team patiently waited for the eggs to hatch naturally before returning to work. These small acts of environmental sensitivity are what distinguish this highway project and earn it respect.

National Recognition and Global Standards

The quality of this road has not gone unnoticed. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways presented ULCCS with the National Highways Excellence Award. Even more impressive, the Thalappady-Chengala stretch was named one of the top 12 roads in the country for the official 2026 NHAI calendar. It is the only project from Kerala to receive such a prestigious honour.

The road is designed to provide a smooth driving experience, with service roads stretching 35 kilometres to ensure that local traffic does not interfere with high-speed transit. The design, which includes 21 underpasses and multiple pedestrian overbridges, prioritises everyone’s safety. The 24-hour surveillance and smart drainage systems ensure that the highway remains stable even in the most severe weather conditions.

A Boost for the Local Economy

Beyond the bitumen and concrete, this highway serves as an economic engine. It gives you faster access to major hubs like Azhikkal Port and tourist destinations like Bekal. For local traders and farmers, shorter travel times result in lower logistics costs and fresher produce reaching markets. The six-lane configuration allows for much higher traffic volume, eliminating bottlenecks that previously plagued Kerala’s northern gateway.

As the Prime Minister dedicated this stretch to the nation, it was clear that Kerala’s transport landscape is changing. This project bridges the divide between the state’s traditional charm and its ambitions for a high-technology future. With ULCCS setting the bar so high, the remaining stretches of the NH-66 project will now have a gold standard to follow.
