In the challenging geological terrain of Jammu and Kashmir, the forthcoming Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) has ushered in a new era for bridge construction. With a total length of 2.3 kilometres, the project consists of a network of 16 large and small bridges, two of which use Italian technology. On the 66-km-long alignment being completed by Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., the bridges are being built by Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. in Mumbai (KRCL).
To offset seismic strain and improve safety, 16 Pre-loaded Spring Dampers (PSDs) are being put on Bridges No. 39 and 43 for the first time in India. The PSDs installation, which was imported from Italy, will begin the following month and be finished by the end of the year. In the Reasi, Bakkal, Kouri, and Sangaldan areas, these bridges will soon be built. The Italian carpentry teams for installing the PSDs have arrived at the location, which will be the main span and two platform spans of the two bridges. On Bridge 30, which faces the Chenab Valley, a tie-down device is also being employed to prevent the high wind velocity from hitting the structure and maintain its safety.
