UPMRC Set to Transform the City: A New Era for Lucknow Metro’s East-West Corridor

The city of Nawabs is going to undergo a huge architectural transformation as the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) formally accelerates its expansion plans. For years, the North-South corridor has served as a lifeline for commuters, but the city’s heart—its ancient old quarters—has remained untouched by contemporary transit. The wait is finally over.

In a historic move in February 2026, UPMRC awarded the first major consultant contract for the highly anticipated East-West Corridor (Line-2). This is more than simply a technological update; it is the official go-ahead for a project that will transform how Lucknow moves, breathes, and links its history and future.

The Winning Partners

The Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract has been awarded to a joint venture between AYESA Ingenieria Arquitectura SAU and AYESA India Pvt Ltd. AYESA won a contract worth ₹15.90 crore after a competitive bidding process started in late 2025.

This collaboration is critical since the DDC acts as the “brain” of the infrastructure. They are responsible for the careful planning of everything from civil constructions and architectural beauty to the complex electrical and mechanical systems that will keep the trains running smoothly.

A Corridor of Two Worlds

The East-West Corridor is both demanding and fascinating. It spans 11.165 kilometers, connecting the bustling Charbagh Railway Station to the growing fringes of Vasant Kunj.

The project’s divided personality distinguishes it as a modern engineering marvel. Nearly 6.8 kilometers of the track will be hidden deep underground, winding through the tiny, crowded streets of Old Lucknow. The last 4.2 kilometers will rise above ground on an elevated bridge, providing a bird’s-eye view of the city’s changing cityscape.

Exploring the Heart of Old Lucknow

For anyone who has attempted to negotiate the maze-like streets of Aminabad or Chowk, the prospect of a subway is nothing short of miraculous. These regions are the heart of Lucknow, known for their kebabs, chikan needlework, and historical sites such as the Bara Imambara and Rumi Darwaza.

The underground part is specifically designed to preserve this legacy while addressing the issue of traffic congestion. With seven subterranean stations, including Gautam Buddha Marg, Aminabad, and Medical Chauraha, commuters will be able to avoid the surface-level traffic completely.

Elevating the Western Suburbs

As the line advances westward, it becomes elevated. This segment will consist of five stations: Thakurganj, Balaganj, Sarfarazganj, Moosabagh, and Vasant Kunj.

This phase of the project is projected to spark a real estate and commercial boom in the western perimeter. These residential zones will be incorporated into the city’s core economic fabric by giving a direct link to the Charbagh transportation hub.

Funding the Future

A project of this scale necessitates a significant financial investment. The anticipated cost of the East-West Corridor is ₹5,801 crore.

Support has come in from the highest levels. The Union Budget 2026-27 has budgeted ₹1,450 crore for this phase. This funding keeps the project on track for completion in five years. It is a true collaborative initiative, with the Central and State governments contributing financially to keep Lucknow mobile.

Beyond Just Tracks and Trains

The UPMRC isn’t simply building a railway; it’s creating a smart ecosystem. The contract awarded to AYESA comprises the design of a specialized Metro Depot in Vasant Kunj. This depot will act as the major hub for maintenance and operations.

Furthermore, the new line will initially utilize three-coach trains, which were chosen for their energy efficiency and adaptability for the corridor’s particular geology. These trains can be expanded to five carriages as the ridership increases.

The Road Ahead

With the design consultant now on board, the city will soon see a flurry of activity. Geotechnical surveys are already being completed, and the first construction tenders for elevated parts have been issued. The inhabitants of Lucknow should hope to see the first signs of progress in the coming months.
