UPMRC expedites the tunnelling phase of the Kanpur metro project

The 4-km-long underground segment between Chunniganj and Nayaganj, which is part of the 23-km-long Corridor-1 of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project from IIT to Naubasta, has begun to be tunnelled by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC). The two Dig Boring Machines “Nana” and “Tatya” would be used to tunnel the subterranean portion between Chunniganj and Nayaganj, according to the officially appointed MD, Sushil Kumar. A rectangular launching shaft with dimensions of approximately 21 metres long, 24 metres wide, and 17.5 metres deep was used to lower both TBM machines. With the aid of the first TBM “Nana,” construction of a down-line tunnel from Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj has just started. A few days later, construction of an up-line tunnel will start.

The TBM machines have been given the names “Nana” and “Tatya” by UPMRC in honour of two outstanding liberation fighters who were crucial to the independence movement. Both of these revolutionaries have a unique connection with Kanpur. The tunnel boring machines employed on this underground stretch have a total length of about 80 metres and weigh roughly 450 tonnes. These tools will be used to build a tunnel with a diameter of 5.8 metres. A new accomplishment for the Kanpur Metro is the tunnelling work in the underground stretch between Chunniganj and Nayaganj. The TBMs “Nana” and “Tatya” will pave the way for the realisation of Kanpur’s desire for a top-notch metro system.

The UPMRC will be able to build subterranean tunnels in the centre of the city with the aid of these cutting-edge TBMs in total safety and without interfering with the flow of traffic on the highways. Two metro corridors are to be built as part of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project, the first between IIT and Naubasta with a length of approximately 23 km, and the second between Chandrashekhar Azad University and Barra-8 with a length of around 8 km.
