The National Highway Authority of India, which is converting the Chandigarh-Manali national highway into a four-lane highway by erecting 14 double-tube tunnels, has made a breakthrough in another traffic tunnel. Many large and minor bridges and tunnels are being built as part of the NH-3 four-laning project, and work on all of the tunnels is in various phases.
The building has been slow in some areas in the past, but it has recently picked up speed. The 1,245-meter-long tunnel between Malori and Nela, which will bypass Mandi, has been finished. This tunnel will be finished in a few months and turned over to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) by February of next year.
The motorway is projected to be completed within the next three years, cutting travel time between Chandigarh and Manali from 9-10 hours to approximately 7 hours.
