The Rail Vikas Nigam (RVNL) and the Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Port Kolkata (SMPK) have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of rail-port connectivity infrastructure. Despite the fact that logistics have mostly been pushed to roadways, the MoU will make it easier to emphasis on logistics transportation by train.
RVNL and SMPK have agreed to cooperate and work on a fast-track basis to increase the capacity of rail infrastructure for the port. The agreement allows for the formation of a special purpose company (SPV) to plan, mobilise, and build railway projects, including port and hinterland linkages. Given the massive increase in freight handling at these two dock systems, the rail infrastructure under SMPK also requires upgrading and expansion. A task force comprising representatives from both the SMPK and the RVNL would be constituted.
