Worth ₹5,400 Cr in Durgapur, West Bengal
Durgapur, July 18, 2025 – In a high-profile visit that blended governance with political messaging, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for central infrastructure projects totalling approximately ₹5,400 crore across key sectors: oil & gas, power, railways, and roads Addressing an enthusiastic crowd in his capacity as both a statesman and national leader, he underscored the projects as emblematic of India’s drive toward a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Solidifying Gas Infrastructure & Clean Energy Aspirations
One of the flagship projects is the BPCL City Gas Distribution (CGD) initiative in Bankura & Purulia, valued at Rs 1,950 crore. It aims to deliver piped natural gas (PNG) for households, commercial entities, and industries, alongside new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) retail stations – expected to generate substantial local employment
Complementing this is the inauguration of the Durgapur–Kolkata segment of the ambitious Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga gas pipeline (132 km, ₹1,190 crore), enhancing energy access for lakhs of households and boosting industrial capacity . Modi emphasized the “One Nation, One Gas Grid” vision as a cornerstone for equitable industrial growth in eastern India
Furthering clean energy credentials, the Durgapur Steel and Raghunathpur Thermal Power Stations under DVC have been equipped with flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems (₹1,457 crore), a move that significantly lowers sulphur emissions and promises healthier air in the region
Rail & Road Enhancements for Connectivity and Commerce
The doubling of the 36 km Purulia–Kotshila railway line (₹390 crore) underscores the government’s commitment to industrial connectivity, linking key hubs like Jamshedpur, Bokaro, and Kolkata—and enabling smoother freight movement
Additionally, two road over-bridges (ROBs) in Paschim Bardhaman, worth ₹380 crore under the Setu Bharatam initiative, were inaugurated to enhance safety and fluidity around railway crossings
Modernising Industry and Creating Job Growth
Modi also spotlighted technology upgrades in Durgapur and Raghunathpur power and steel plants—totaling around ₹1,500 crore in investments—to boost global competitiveness and operational efficiency . These upgrades are expected to spur fresh employment opportunities during both construction and operational phases.
Leadership Narrative: Development, Polls & Regional Revival
Framing the event within a broader political narrative, Modi sharply criticized the state government, accusing it of hampering industrial growth and failing on jobs, women’s safety, and governance He called West Bengal “stagnant under TMC misrule” and pitched the BJP as a viable alternative for the upcoming 2026 assembly elections
At the same time, he presented these projects as tangible proof of the Centre’s hands-on, execution-first approach—underscored by slogans like “Make in India, Make for the World” and “One Nation, One Gas Grid”, all aligned with India’s ambitious 2047 development goal Modi also highlighted local gains: new Vande Bharat trains, expanded Kolkata Metro, airport connectivity under UDAN (₹5 lakh+ passengers last year), and improved rail infrastructure—all designed to visibly enhance day-to-day life in Bengal
