OpenAI ChatGPT 4o wouldn’t have been possible without this Indian man says Sam Altman

Prafulla Dhariwal, a native of Pune, is credited by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman with developing ChatGPT 4o, a novel AI model that has gained significant attention since its release. “GPT-4o would not have happened without the vision, talent, conviction, and determination of Prafulla Dhariwal over a long period of time,” he said on X, the previous Twitter platform. That resulted in what I think will be a revolution in the way we use computers, together with the work of many others.

In response to Dhariwal’s post discussing the new AI model, the CEO of OpenAI said this. He stated, “OpenAI’s first natively completely multimodal model, GPT-4o (o for “omni”), is the first model to emerge from the omni team. Although the entire organisation put a lot of work into this launch, I want to personally thank a handful of my amazing team colleagues for helping to make this amazing concept a reality.

Prafulla Dhariwal has always been bright and the recipient of several academic honours and medals. In 2009, he was awarded a gold medal in the International Astronomy Olympiad in China and a National Talent Search Scholarship by the Government of India. Additional accolades include gold medals from competitions in mathematics, physics, and other fields. In 2011, he was a student at Pune’s Dr. Kalmadi Shyamrao High School.

In class XII, he received a score of 295 out of 300 in the physics, chemistry and maths (PCM) group and 330 out of 360 in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE-Mains). At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he studied for his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (Mathematics), earning a flawless 5.0/5.0 GPA upon graduation in 2017.

Following college, he interned at the D.E. Shaw Group as a quantitative analyst and worked as a software engineer for Pinterest. He began working with OpenAI as a research intern later in 2016 and is currently hired by the AI firm as a research scientist. Dhariwal has contributed to GPT-3, the reversible generative model Glow, and the text-to-image platform DALL-E 2.
