MCRL expedites inner rail corridor in Odisha

The 68 km long Inner Rail Corridor, which will be constructed by IRCON in phases, is now being built faster thanks to Mahanadi Coal Railway Limited (MCRL). Phase I of the two phases is the Angul-Balram Rail Link (14 km), and Phase II is the Balram-Putugadia-Jarapada-Tentuloi Rail Link (54 km). While site acquisition for Phase II is in progress, construction on Phase-I is currently in full swing. Forestry clearances and all other required clearances have already been completed. Recently, the Principal Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Bhubaneswar, approved the site specification and wildlife management plan as well as the compliance to observation for Stage-II clearance.

The goal of this project is to create a common rail corridor for the evacuation of coal from CIL and non-CIL coal blocks in the Talcher Coal Field Area. It will also provide multiple entry and exit points for coal rakes for faster evacuation and decongest the Indian Railway system by avoiding concentration of rakes at limited entry and exit routes from Talcher Coal Field, from which the government plans to produce coal by 2030.
