The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the inclusion of Bihar’s Kosi-Mechi Intra-State Link Project under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (PMKSY-AIBP). The project, estimated at ₹6,282.32 crore, will receive ₹3,652.56 crore in central support and is set for completion by March 2029 March 2029 and includes a central assistance of ₹3,652.56 crore to Bihar.

The project aims to divert part of surplus water of the Kosi river for extending irrigation to the Mahananda basin in Bihar by remodeling the existing Eastern Kosi Main Canal (EKMC) and extending the EKMC beyond its tail end to river Mechi. The Link Project will provide 2,10,516 hectares additional annual irrigation in Kharif season in Araria, Purnea, Kishanganj, and Katihar districts of Bihar.

Project Overview
