Kolkata is on the cusp of a significant transportation milestone with the introduction of its first-ever airport metro link, set to be completed by July. The project promises to drastically improve connectivity between the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) and various parts of the city, offering both residents and travelers a faster and more efficient mode of transport.
The metro link, which is being developed as part of a broader initiative to modernize and expand Kolkata’s public transport infrastructure, aims to reduce travel time to and from the airport, making the process more convenient and comfortable. This long-awaited project has been under construction for several years, with planning and design work beginning long before ground- .
Project Overview
The airport metro link is being constructed as an extension of Kolkata’s existing East-West Metro Corridor, a crucial part of the city’s metro expansion plan. The project involves the construction of a 4.1-kilometer stretch that connects the airport to the Central Business District (CBD) of Kolkata, specifically the Salt Lake Sector.
The new metro line will not only serve passengers flying in and out of the airport but will also provide a much-needed relief to daily commuters. The metro system is designed to offer a high-frequency service, running every 15 minutes during peak hours, which will ensure minimal waiting time and enhance convenience.
The route will feature state-of-the-art stations equipped with modern amenities, providing a comfortable and seamless travel experience V, via a high-speed metro rail system. Once operational, it will significantly cut down the travel time between the city’s central areas and the airport from the current 45 minutes or more to just around 30 minutes.
Additionally, the metro link will have a positive environmental impact. With a significant reduction in the number of private vehicles to the airport, emissions will decrease, contributing to the city’s overall sustainability goals. Public transportation is a key element in reducing the carbon footprint of a city, and the metro system aligns with the growing push towards greener, more sustainable infrastructure.
Moreover, the project is expected to have an economic impact by boosting tourism and business in the city. Easier access to the airport means that more tourists will be encouraged to visit Kolkata, while businesspeople will find it more convenient to travel to and from meetings, conferences, and other events. This could lead to a boost in the local economy, especially in sectors like hospitality, retail, and tourism.
