Kolkata Port appoints consultant for ₹2,000-cr tunnel

A consultant has been hired by Kolkata Port, also known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, to conduct a techno-feasibility study for a tunnel beneath the Hooghly River connecting the towns of Kolkata and Howrah.

The tunnel that is being considered will be the country’s second of its sort and will be located downstream of the tunnel being built by the East West Metro Railway. The tunnel will relieve traffic on the city’s roads and allow cargo-laden vehicles from the port to proceed quickly and unhindered from the Khidirpur dock area.

Chairman Vinit Kumar said that Rodic Consultants had been chosen to conduct the techno-feasibility study. The project includes a bridge that connects to the national roads as well as a road tunnel. The consultant will cost an estimated 2000 crore and is scheduled to deliver a report in 7-8 months.

The night navigation facility will soon be built as part of the upgrades being made at the Kolkata Port to increase inland waterways cargo flow on National Waterways 1, which connects Prayagraj to Haldia in West Bengal. A 3,000 crore investment will be made in berth modernization as the port moves toward turning over berth management to the private sector. The port has previously given the Adani company a berth at Haldia, which will invest nearly ₹300 crore.
