Imagine driving through the heart of Telangana, where the horizon meets a continuous ribbon of asphalt, reducing travel time and boosting the local economy. This vision is quickly becoming a reality. KNR Constructions Limited has received a ₹1,734 crore project from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), marking a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure landscape. This is more than just another road contract; it is a high-stakes transformation of the NH-167 corridor that has the potential to redefine regional connectivity.

The Scale of the Ambition
The project focuses on four-laning the Gudebellur to Mahabubnagar section of NH 167. This stretch, which spans exactly 80.01 kilometres, is an important artery in the Hyderabad-Panaji Economic Corridor. By expanding this highway, the NHAI hopes to eliminate the arduous traffic bottlenecks that have long plagued commuters travelling between these critical hubs. KNR Constructions, which is already deeply rooted in Hyderabad, sees this win as a homecoming, reinforcing their dominance in the southern infrastructure market.
Mastering the Hybrid Annuity Mode
One of the most intriguing aspects of this transaction is its financial structure. The project will be carried out under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM). If you’re unfamiliar with the term, HAM is a hybrid of the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) and BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) models. The government contributes 40% of the project’s cost in fixed installments, while the developer—in this case, KNR Constructions—provides the remaining 60%. This balance distributes risk while ensuring that the private player remains committed to long-term quality.
A Two-Year Race Against Time
Speed is of the essence here. The contract calls for a construction period of 730 days. This gives KNR exactly two years to convert 80 kilometres of existing road into a modern, four-lane powerhouse. However, the relationship does not end when the ribbons are cut. The agreement includes a lengthy 15-year operation and maintenance period. This means that KNR will be in charge of the highway’s maintenance long after the heavy machinery has moved on to the next site, ensuring a smooth ride for a decade and a half.
Engineering a Better Journey
This isn’t just about putting down tar and gravel. The project entails a complex series of engineering feats. To ensure that traffic flows smoothly, KNR will build five major bridges and 36 minor bridges. The plan also includes 11 vehicular underpasses and 22 light vehicular underpasses (LVUPs), which are critical to the safety of local villagers and livestock. In addition, a 56-kilometer slip road and 48 kilometres of service roads will be built to safely separate local and long-distance traffic.
Connecting Economic Powerhouses
This highway has far-reaching consequences. By upgrading NH-167, the project connects three major PM Gati Shakti economic nodes. It also connects to seven logistics nodes and nine social nodes, effectively forming a web of accessibility. It provides a direct boost to the pharmaceutical and medical clusters near Hyderabad, as well as several Special Economic Zones. Faster logistics result in lower costs for businesses and fresher products for customers, demonstrating that better roads lead to better lives.
Beyond The Asphalt
For KNR Constructions, this victory comes at an important time. Despite recent pressure on quarterly profits, the company’s order book remains strong at around ₹8,849 crore. The new NHAI contract, along with a recent ₹84 crore urban road project in the Hyderabad Growth Corridor, demonstrate the company’s aggressive growth strategy. To keep their revenue streams stable and their workforce active, they are balancing massive national highway projects with smaller, more rapid urban developments.
A New Era for Telangana
The Gudebellur-Mahabubnagar upgrade will primarily benefit towns such as Makthal, Marikal, and Devarkadra. These areas frequently experience significant delays that disrupt daily life and commerce. With a four-lane standard, road safety is expected to improve dramatically, lowering the high accident rates common on narrow, overcrowded roads. As KNR prepares to break ground, the countdown begins to a faster, safer, and more prosperous Telangana.
