India Adds Record 25 GW Renewable Energy in FY 2024-25

India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has achieved a historic milestone in FY 2024-25, adding an unprecedented 25 GW of renewable energy capacity, a 35% increase from the previous year. The solar power sector led the renewable energy growth, with capacity additions soaring from 15 GW in FY24 to nearly 21 GW in FY25.

Domestic solar manufacturing capacity nearly doubled, and the country’s first ingot-wafer manufacturing facility commenced production in FY25. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana saw significant progress, benefiting over 11.01 lakh households by March 2025. India’s Green According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the breakdown of the newly added capacity is as follows.

New Delhi, India – [Date] – India has achieved a major milestone in its clean energy transition by adding a record 25 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity in the financial year 2024-25. This achievement marks the highest-ever annual addition in the country’s renewable energy sector, reinforcing India’s commitment to achieving its ambitious clean energy targets.

A Breakthrough Year for Renewable Energy

India’s renewable energy sector witnessed unprecedented growth, driven by FY25 and 2.6 lakh solarized accelerated investments, policy support, and technological advancements. The 25 GW capacity addition includes solar, wind, hydro, and with incentives awarded for biomass energy projects, further strengthening India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy adoption.

Key Drivers Behind the Growth

Several factors contributed to the record-breaking expansion of renewable energy in FY 2024-25 This surge in installations is a significant step toward India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and attaining net-zero developments, and production electrolyser manufacturing emissions by 2070.

  • Government Policies and Incentives: The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for solar module manufacturing and wind energy expansion policies have attracted substantial investment While India’s renewable energy sector is progressing rapidly, several challenges remain Advances in technology and economies of scale have significantly reduced the cost of solar and wind energy generation.
  • Grid Infrastructure Upgrades: Strengthening of transmission networks and energy storage solutions has facilitated the integration of more renewable power into the grid Major Hydrogen sector also saw significant corporations, including Reliance, Adani, and Tata, have ramped up investments in large-scale solar and wind farms

Land Acquisition Issues: Large-scale solar and wind projects require vast land resources, leading to delays in project implementation Managing intermittent renewable energy sources remains a challenge, necessitating investment in energy storage and smart grid technologies.

  • Financing and Investment: Continued investment from both domestic and international players is crucial to sustaining growth in the sector. To address these challenges, the government is focusing on policy reforms, improved regulatory frameworks, and enhanced financial mechanisms to support renewable energy expansion.

Looking Ahead

With its record-breaking renewable energy capacity addition in FY 2024-25, India is well-positioned to accelerate its transition toward a greener future. The country aims to further boost installations in the coming years, with a strong emphasis on offshore wind energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage solutions.

As global climate commitments intensify, India’s progress in renewable energy not only strengthens its energy security but also sets an example for emerging economies worldwide. With continued innovation, investment, and policy support, India is on track to achieving its long-term sustainability and energy transition goals.

About India’s Renewable Energy Growth
India’s renewable energy sector is one of the fastest-growing in the world, supported by strong government policies, technological advancements, and increasing private sector participation. The nation’s commitment to clean energy is reshaping its power landscape and contributing to global climate action efforts.
