The world’s longest highway tunnel between Lahaul valley in Himachal Pradesh and Zanskar valley in Union Territory of Ladakh, which will provide all-weather connectivity between Himachal and Ladakh, has been fast-tracked and will be ready by 2025. The new road, which is now open to traffic, will be officially opened for all types of vehicles in three years, when the widening and blacktopping of the highway, as well as the completion of the Shinku-La tunnel, are completed. The remaining stretch between Padum and Nimmu will be formed cut soon, and a new road construction company will be established in the area. At an altitude of about 16,000 feet, the Shinku-La tunnel will be 4.25 kilometres long, making it the world’s highest and longest tunnel at this altitude. The tunnel’s construction will begin in July or August of this year. The travel time has been reduced to only a few hours and will continue to be reduced after the ongoing works are completed.
