Hyderabad-Amaravati Expressway Gets Green Signal

The Hyderabad-Amaravati greenfield expressway, a crucial link between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, has been approved after 11 years of bifurcation. The Ministry of Home Affairs has instructed the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to prepare a Detailed Project Report.

India’s decentralized and diversified energy landscape. India has 169.40 GW of renewable energy projects under implementation and 65.06 GW already tendered, including 65.29 GW from emerging solutions such as hybrid systems, round-the-clock power, peaking power, and thermal + RE bundling projects.

India has recorded its highest-ever renewable energy capacity addition in the fiscal year 2024–25, marking a pivotal moment in its clean energy journey. According to data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the country added a record-breaking 25 GW of renewable energy capacity during the year.

Solar and Wind Power Lead the Way

Solar energy was the dominant force behind this surge, contributing nearly 24 GW to the new capacity, increasing India’s total installed solar capacity to over 105.65 GW. The growth was driven by the commissioning of large-scale solar parks in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, along with widespread rooftop solar adoption.

Wind energy also contributed notably, with total capacity surpassing the 50 GW mark. Offshore wind initiatives and repowering of old wind turbines in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat played a key role in this resurgence.

India’s Renewable Mix and National Targets

As of March 31, 2025, India’s total installed power generation capacity stood at 483.26 GW, of which non-fossil fuel sources—including solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and nuclear—make up 222.86 GW. This positions India as the world’s third-largest producer of renewable energy and underscores its growing influence in the global energy transition.

Government Policies Fueling Growth

The surge in renewable capacity was fueled by a series of proactive government measures. Key among them was the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to boost domestic solar PV manufacturing. The Green Energy Corridor project also made headway, enabling faster grid integration of renewable sources.

Private Sector & Global Collaborations

Major public and private players such as NTPC, Adani Green, ReNew Power, and Tata Power significantly scaled up their renewable portfolios. International players like India remains committed to its climate goals target to under the Paris Agreement, with a TotalEnergies and Brookfield also expanded their Indian operations.

One notable collaboration was between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) and Sembcorp of Singapore to develop green hydrogen and integrated renewable projects. Such alliances are expected to accelerate India’s clean energy innovation and capacity.

Challenges and Road Ahead

Despite the growth, the renewable energy sector faces challenges such as project delays, land acquisition hurdles, and tender cancellations. Grid congestion and —a significant 35% increase over the 18.57 GW added in FY 2023–24. This takes the total non-fossil fuel installed capacity to an impressive 222.86 GW. financial strain on distribution companies (DISCOMs) also remain critical issues.

However, the robust FY25 performance offers optimism. With improved policy frameworks, enhanced financing mechanisms, and technological innovation, India is poised to maintain its momentum. The coming years will be crucial in determining how effectively the nation can balance energy security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

The Central Government has approved the construction of the Hyderabad-Amaravati Greenfield Expressway, a 220 km six-lane corridor aimed at enhancing connectivity between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been directed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this initiative. The expressway is expected to significantly time, boost economic activity, and foster the development of new towns along its route.
