For nearly a lakh commuters who travel between Ahmedabad and Mehsana on a daily basis, that dream is going to come true. The Gujarat Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, has approved a ₹2,630 crore project to upgrade the existing four-lane highway into an eight-lane corridor.

This project, which spans approximately 51.60 kilometers from the Adalaj junction to the Palavasna Circle in Mehsana, aims to change how the state moves, connects, and evolves. The sheer scale of this investment highlights the government’s commitment to the vision of “Viksit Gujarat.” By increasing the lanes, the initiative hopes to reduce travel time between these two main hubs from an hour to 45-50 minutes. Eight New Flyovers: To avoid interference from other traffic, these will be positioned strategically at major intersections such as Shertha, Rajpur Bhasaria, Jagudan, and Mevad.
Eight New Underpasses: These are designed to allow safe access for local inhabitants and cattle, ensuring that the high-speed transportation on the main routes continues uninterrupted.
A New Railway Overbridge (ROB): A four-lane ROB will be built at Vaghara, parallel to the existing one, to alleviate the narrow “neck” that causes rail-crossing delays.

Safety has been a persistent worry along this route, which was last significantly updated in 1999. With vehicle volume now topping 100,000 per day, the traditional four-lane plan could no longer keep up with the density.
Dedicated Service Roads For Local Traffic
The new permission calls for the construction of 7-meter-wide service roads on both sides of the 51-kilometer route. This guarantees that slow-moving local cars, tractors, and two-wheelers are physically segregated from high-speed traffic. This separation has been proved to reduce the probability of side-impact accidents and pedestrian fatalities on high-traffic roadways.
Empowering the North Gujarat Economy
The effects of this highway will extend far beyond the surface. Residents of Mehsana, Patan, and Banaskantha districts have long sought this development. Farmers in North Gujarat benefit from speedier access to Ahmedabad’s huge wholesale marketplaces. For industrial companies in Chhatral and Mehsana, it implies a more efficient logistical chain that saves money on fuel and vehicle wear and tear.
A Two-Year Timeline for Transformation
The Gujarat government isn’t planning to stay in the slow lane regarding execution. Following Cabinet permission, the tendering procedure is likely to commence soon. Once the contracts are awarded, the project must be completed within two years.
Future-Proofing the Corridor
All existing bridges, pipe culverts, and box culverts will be enlarged to accommodate the new eight-lane standard. This “future-proofing” method ensures that the highway will not only alleviate today’s difficulties, but will also be prepared for the traffic demands of the coming decade.
