Google scales back AI Search feature after multiple inaccurate results
A.I. Overviews is a new feature that Google CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled for the company’s search engine last month.

A.I. Overviews is a new feature that Google CEO Sundar Pichai unveiled for the company’s search engine last month. The purpose of this feature was to produce thorough information summaries that would appear directly above conventional search results. A few inquiries were submitted at the Google search engine during the Google I/O 2024 demonstration, and the results produced AI summaries. The New York Times story claims that the same inquiries do not now produce any AI summary.

Only one of the six original public questions was answered, “What are some interesting science projects my 12-year-old son and I can work on?” prompted an accurate AI Overview on a regular basis.

Some of the searches were replaced with standard search results from particular websites. Due to multiple mistakes and inconsistencies produced by the A.I., such as advising glue for pizza recipes and recommended consuming pebbles for nutrition, this modification appeared to be the result of a larger rollback. Although the feature is now not widely accessible in India, people can still use it through Google Labs.

The feature appears to have been reduced, even with Labs. For questions like “What is the size of the earth?” it provides simple factual summaries; but, it does not appear to produce a response for questions like “What is the size of India?” Instead, it offers a passage taken from a reputable source.

These errors were widely parodied on social media by users. In a blog post, Google’s new head of search, Liz Reid, stated that the business had improved the way it triggers A.I. Overviews to omit satire and user reactions from Reddit and to avoid giving inaccurate advice, especially when it comes to health-related inquiries. She underlined the need for continual upgrades and enhancements to boost the accuracy and security of the feature.

A Google representative reportedly acknowledged to the report that while the feature is being updated, it is not being discontinued.

In an effort to make content creation easier, Google recently unveiled Gemini, a collection of new artificial intelligence models for developers, and incorporated AI technology into services like YouTube, Gmail, and Docs.

Although many of these features are still under development, Liz Reid demonstrated the potential of A.I. Overviews for managing complex queries during Google’s developer conference. The implementation of the function has come under fire because of instances of harmful or inaccurate advice.
