Google CEO Sundar Pichai says India is well-positioned to influence global AI development

According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, India is in a strong position to influence AI development on a global scale. During the discussion at Google’s annual I/O 2024 conference, the CEO of the internet giant told Mint. “Technological shifts present opportunities for India and other emerging countries to either catch up or leap ahead,” he stated.

He went on to say that although India was never going to overtake the developed world in terms of computer penetration, most people there now had access to phones, compared to prior generations. He mentioned that a lot of Indian customers have shifted from using landlines to using cell phones directly in their nation. He went on to say that there’s always a potential for more penetration with new technical advancements, and AI is no different.

Google is pushing for the use of AI by luring developers into the ecosystem powered by Gemini. In response, Pichai disclosed that a large number of their developers are solely Indian. “In terms of our user base, India is the top geography for many of our products,” he said. We’re devoted to providing these same AI technologies to them on a global scale. Already, we observe a lot of Indian developer activity on top of our AI systems. India will be in a good position as the world moves towards artificial intelligence, and I believe this will be an exciting time.

In India, some of the most well-liked Google products include YouTube and Google Search. India accounts for about 480 million of YouTube’s active users. “We’re working on products like SynthID and AI-assisted red teaming in part to stay ahead of these problems as we deploy AI, and our work is particularly applicable in products like Search and YouTube,” he stated.

Google has been promoting the SynthID tool to watermark material and deter AI manipulation because India is holding elections. During the current election season, India has also seen a number of deepfake incidents, including those involving Amir Khan, Ranveer Singh, and other celebrities.

Speaking on artificial intelligence’s involvement in elections, Pichai stated, “We’ve all been concerned about deepfakes given the pace of technology’s progress.” As a culture, we’re still lucky enough to be able to distinguish between what is and isn’t genuine, at least so far this year. With all we’re working on, I’m cautiously optimistic that we can manage everything and do our share. Although this year will see more stakes, for the time being I’m cautiously hopeful about our situation.
