Hindustan Zinc Limited in India has given a sizable order for mining equipment and aftermarket support to Epiroc, a premier productivity and sustainability partner for the mining and construction industries.
Third-largest producer of silver and the second-largest producer of zinc worldwide is Hindustan Zinc, a division of Vedanta Group. Along with rigs for production drilling, face drilling, and rock reinforcing, the company has placed an order for a fleet of mine trucks.
The machinery will be utilised at its mines in the northwest Indian state of Rajasthan, specifically in the areas of Rajpura Dariba, Zawar, Sindesar Khurd, Rampura Agucha, and Kayad. The equipment order was scheduled for 2Q24 and has an approximate value of SEK 215 million.
A comprehensive service and maintenance contract covering a duration of six to eight years is also provided for the equipment. Among the machine’s features is Epiroc’s Rig Control System (RCS), which enables remote control and automation. Beginning with 3Q24, deliveries will take place until early 2025.
Helena Hedblom, President and CEO of Epiroc, stated, “We have a long-standing and fruitful partnership with Hindustan Zinc, and we are happy to continue supporting the company on its journey towards operations that are as safe and productive as possible.”
Arunkumar Govindarajan, President of Epiroc India, continued, “Epiroc has supported the development of Hindustan Zinc in India with underground mining equipment since the 1980s.” “To support the “Make in India” initiatives, more than half of the machines in this order will be delivered from Epiroc’s Nashik manufacturing facility.”
The Simba E70 S production drilling rig, the Boomer M2D face drilling rig, the Cabletec M10 S rock-reinforcement rig, and the Minetruck MT65 S are among the equipment that was ordered. The machines belong to the Smart series, as indicated by the “S” on them.
In June 2024, Epiroc, a leading provider of mining and construction equipment, secured a significant order from Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL), India’s premier zinc producer and a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group. The order, valued at approximately SEK 215 million (around USD 20.6 million), encompasses a range of advanced mining machinery and aftermarket support.
Equipment Details:
The procurement includes a fleet of Minetruck MT65 S trucks, renowned for their high-capacity underground hauling capabilities. Additionally, HZL has invested in several drilling and rock reinforcement rigs:
- Simba E70 S: A production drilling rig designed for accurate and efficient drilling operations.
- Boomer M2D: A face drilling rig suitable for medium to large-sized tunnels and mining applications.
- Cabletec M10 S: A rock-reinforcement rig that enhances underground safety and stability.
These machines are slated for deployment across HZL’s mining sites in Rajasthan, including Rampura Agucha, Sindesar Khurd, Zawar, Kayad, and Rajpura Dariba.
Local Manufacturing and “Make in India” Initiative:
Demonstrating a commitment to local production, over half of the ordered equipment will be manufactured at Epiroc’s facility in Nashik, Maharashtra. This move aligns with India’s “Make in India” initiative, aiming to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities. Arunkumar Govindarajan, President of Epiroc India, emphasized the company’s longstanding relationship.
HZL, stating, “Epiroc has supported the development of Hindustan Zinc in India with underground mining equipment since the 1980s.” This order not only reinforces Epiroc’s position in the Indian mining sector but also underscores HZL’s dedication to integrating state-of-the-art technology to enhance operational efficiency and safety in its mining endeavors.
