ED makes third arrest in Bengal coal mining money laundering case

According to the ED, one Gurupada Maji was arrested on Thursday in connection with a money laundering probe related to an alleged coal mining scam in West Bengal.

He appeared in front of the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi and was granted seven days in ED custody.

According to the ED, Gurupada Maji is one of Anup Majee’s associates in the illicit coal mining company in West Bengal. According to the ED announcement, he also earned more than Rs 66 crore in Proceeds of Crime (PoC) from Anup Majee alias Lala and his associates from illicit coal mining activity.

Furthermore, he paid a Kolkata-based CA Rs 26 Crore (approx.) in cash to set up shell firms for the purpose of taking accommodation entries.

Gurupada Maji had obtained 13 shell businesses with the assistance of the aforementioned Kolkata-based CA during this procedure. The net worth of these 13 shell businesses exceeds Rs 28 crore, but he acquired them for only Rs 88 lakh on paper to the respective owners, allowing him to get the vast illegally generated funds into the financial system.

In this case, this is the third arrest. Previously, on March 16, 2021 and April 3, 2021, respectively, two accused persons, Shri Vikas Mishra and Shri Ashok Kumar Mishra (Inspector-in-Charge of West Bengal Police), were arrested. On May 13, 2021, a Prosecution Complaint was also filed against Vikas Mishra and Ashok Kumar Mishra in this matter, and the Court was happy to take cognizance of the said Prosecution Complaint on July 28, 2021.

The ED has called Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP and nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in this case, as has his wife Rujira.

This case was initiated by ED on the basis of a CBI FIR dated November 27, 2020 against Amit Kumar Dhar, the then-GM, Kunustoria Area, ECL (Eastern Coalfield Ltd), Jayesh Chandra Rai, General Manager, ECL, Kajora Area, Tanmay Das, Chief of Security, ECL, Asansol, Dhananjay Rai, Area Security Inspector, Kunustoris, ECL, Debashish Mukherjee,

According to the ED, the overall proceeds of crime in the investigation are Rs 1,352 crore, and it has attached assets worth Rs 180 crore so far.
