Housing and Urban Affairs Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has informed that the DPR of the Jammu-Srinagar Metrolite Railway is ready and the 7,942 crore project will soon be approved. Metrolite’s work will begin in Jammu and Srinagar, the twin capital city of the Union Territory. The subway should run earlier on roads with so many tunnels and other obstacles, but found that this was not feasible, so a new DPR was prepared. According to the city’s conditions and master plan, Metrolite will now replace the subway, but in the city of Jammu and Srinagar, a railway line will be laid on the overpass, and these cities are building on the determined transportation routes. In Jammu, a 23-kilometer line will be laid at an investment of Rs 3,593 crore, while in Srinagar, a 25-kilometer line will cost Rs 4,352 crore. The Jammu light rail system is 23 kilometers long and has 22 stations between Bantarab and Bali Brahmin. The Srinagar light rail system will be 25 kilometers long, including the 12.5 kilometers from Indira Nagar to HMT Junction. The 12.5 kilometers from Hazuri Bagh to Osmanabad has 24 stations (12 stations per corridor). The elevated subway track system will not only provide convenience for people, but also have a positive impact on the economy and quality of life. The subway projects in these two cities will be cost-effective and a big step towards sustainable public transportation. The deadline for completing these two projects is the end of 2023.
