Construction Begins on Longest Tunnel of Dimapur-Kohima Rail Line
In the new rail line project between Dimapur and Kohima, this tunnel is expected to be the longest.

In the Tsiepama hamlet of the Medziphema circle in the Dimapur district of Nagaland, work has started on Portal 1 of Tunnel Number 7 of the Dimapur-Kohima new rail line project. In the new rail line project between Dimapur and Kohima, this tunnel is expected to be the longest.

The tunnel is 6,610 meters long, according to Northeast Frontier Railway Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Sabyasachi De. A 12-kilometer approach road was built to get from Tsiepama hamlet to Portal 1 of Tunnel No. 7, which is situated through the hills.

The project’s Pherima and Piphema stations are separated by the tunnel. At an estimated cost of Rs. 6,663 crore, the Dimapur-Kohima new railway line project will run 82.50 km (2.75 km in Assam and 79.75 km in Nagaland) from Dhansiri station in Assam to Zubza, which is next to Kohima. Eight new stations—Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Menguzuma, and Zubza—are included in the project. Along with them, there are 148 minor bridges, 5 road over bridges, 15 road under bridges, and 21 tunnels totaling 31 km in length. There are also 27 large bridges. In October 2021, the 16.5 kilometer stretch connecting Dhansiri and Shokhuvi was put into service.
