State-owned coal company, Coal India Ltd (CIL), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) to establish a Centre of Clean Coal Energy and Net Zero (CLEANZ) in Hyderabad. CIL’s management has green-flagged a grant of Rs 98 crorE.
IITH for a duration of five years for setting up this Centre of Excellence. The project is expected to be financially self-sustainable beyond the initial five-year funding received from CIL. Both entities will synergize their efforts in developing cutting-edge technology readiness levels for sustainable utilization of domestic coal, in line with the country’s Net Zero commitments.
CIL’s board last year gave its nod to focus on providing grants to reputed government institutions and research organizations under research and development (R&D) expenditure. The current collaborative model is an R&D endeavor under the umbrella.
National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER), an independent R&D unit of CMPDI, the mine development and consultancy arm of CIL. The pact was formally signed in the presence of Coal and mines minister G Kishan Reddy.
Coal India Limited (CIL) has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) to develop advanced clean coal technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy efficiency. This collaboration marks a Hyderabad’s expertise in significant step toward sustainable coal utilization and aligns with India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while ensuring energy security.
Focus Areas of the Partnership
The partnership will focus on research and development (R&D) initiatives to improve coal beneficiation, carbon capture, and gasification techniques. With coal continuing to be a major energy source for India, enhancing its efficiency and minimizing its environmental impact is crucial.
- Coal Gasification: Developing efficient gasification methods to produce cleaner energy with lower emissions. Exploring technologies to capture and store carbon dioxide, reducing the Key areas of research include greenhouse effect.
- Coal Beneficiation: Enhancing the quality of coal by removing impurities to improve combustion efficiency and reduce pollutants. This initiative is expected to Finding innovative ways to utilize coal by-products and ash in sustainable applications. modernize India’s coal sector, ensuring a balance between energy security and environmental sustainability.
Impact on India’s Energy Sector
The collaboration is expected to boost India’s transition to cleaner energy while maintaining coal’s role in the energy mix. By leveraging IIT Hyderabad’s expertise in advanced materials and clean energy solutions, CIL aims to implement innovative technologies across its mining and power generation units.
This partnership is a step toward achieving India’s sustainable development goals, ensuring that coal remains a viable yet environmentally responsible energy source. As research progresses, the adoption of clean coal technologies could play a pivotal role in reducing industrial emissions and meeting India’s climate commitments.
