Cabinet Approves Major Road, Rail, and Irrigation Projects

The Indian Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved three key projects worth over Rs 48 billion for infrastructure and agricultural development. The initiatives will focus on upgrading canal-based irrigation networks, providing underground pressurised pipelines.

The government aims to delegate irrigation management responsibilities to Water User Societies, which will receive institutional support and be linked to Farmer and enhancing water management systems. Producer Organisations and Primary Agricultural Cooperative Societies for a minimum of five years.

The projects also aim to modernize irrigation systems under the expanded Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). The projects include the construction of a 19.2-km access-controlled Zirakpur Bypass, doubling a railway line in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and improving passenger and freight mobility.

The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a series of major railway projects aimed at improving rail infrastructure projects totaling over ₹4,800 crore, focusing on road, rail, and irrigation sectors. Road Infrastructure: Zirakpur Bypass

A significant approval is the construction of a 19.2-kilometer, six-lane access-controlled Zirakpur Bypass in Punjab and Haryana. With an investment of ₹1,878.31 crore, this project is designed to decongest the heavily urbanized tri-city area of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula. The bypass will improve connectivity between. ​

Railway Projects: Enhancing Connectivity

  1. Doubling of Tirupati–Pakala–Katpadi Railway Line: This 104-kilometer project, with an infrastructure and connectivity estimated cost of ₹1,332 crore, will enhance rail connectivity for pilgrims and tourists in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The doubling of this line is expected to increase freight capacity and reduce travel time, contributing to regional development.
  2. Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor (HORC): Aimed at decongesting Delhi, the HORC is a 121.7-kilometer high-speed railway project connecting Palwal to Sonipat via Sohna, Manesar, and Kharkhoda. Designed for speeds up to 160 km/h, this corridor will facilitate both passenger and freight movement, integrating with existing railway lines and the Western Dedicated.
  3. Freight Corridor.
