BRO launches road upgrades across the border belt

The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has begun upgrading roads all along the border. Reducing damage to the roads at mountain passes and adding more safety precautions to the infrastructure are both parts of BRO’s agenda. InterLocking Concrete Blocks (ILCB) will be used for the road surfacing on all the passes, making the roads skid-resistant and less prone to damage, extending their lifespan.

The installation of impact-arresting steel rope crash barriers, skid and wear-resistant ILCB on Zojila Pass, and other protective measures are presently underway along the Zojila-Kargil-Leh Highway. Dozers are employed to clear the snow off the passes during periods of severe snowfall, although doing so damages the road surface since it scrapes it. Due to excessive snowfall, a number of passes are closed for approximately six months out of the year. This will assist in cleaning them and achieving the objective of maintaining their openness perpetually in the future. The passes are crucial for those residing in far and inaccessible places, in addition to being logistically advantageous.
