Apple has been testing ChatGPT integrated Siri assistant since 2023: Report
Numerous reports have surfaced recently regarding a possible partnership between Apple and OpenAI to develop new AI-powered capabilities for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks

There have been several reports lately regarding a possible agreement between Apple and OpenAI for new AI-powered capabilities for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks. But according to a 9To5Mac article that referenced The Information, Apple has been testing OpenAI’s GPT model internally for its virtual assistant Siri since last year. It further notes that since mid-2023, talks have been ongoing between Apple and Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, reportedly had conversations with Apple staff members working in the machine learning division of the corporation during the June Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) of the previous year. Apple and Altman apparently came to an arrangement for Apple to use OpenAI’s Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for internal testing, while details of the conversations remain unclear.

Using the AI model underlying OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Apple has internally integrated Siri to create a new virtual assistant prototype that was able to handle and analyse far more complicated inquiries and more precisely comprehend the context behind an input. When 9To5Mac revealed that the initial beta of iOS 17.4 included “a new Siri summarization private framework that makes calls to the OpenAI’s ChatGPT API,” it provided evidence of this.

It is expected that Apple will formally announce the agreement during the forthcoming WWDC 2024, which takes place on June 10. New AI tools and capabilities, many of which are anticipated to be driven by OpenAI’s AI models, are anticipated to be included in its next-generation operating system for iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

Although OpenAI’s agreement with Apple would benefit Microsoft, the business that invested $13.1 billion in the company, the story claims that Microsoft has been wary of the collaboration. A partnership between Apple and OpenAI will put the Cupertino, California-based tech behemoth in direct competition with OpenAI, whose GPT model powers Microsoft’s Copilot AI functions.
