AMD introduces new Ryzen AI 300, Ryzen 9000 ‘Zen 5’ processors
With a dedicated NPU, AMD’s third-generation Ryzen AI 300 series CPU offers up to 50 TOPs of AI performance.

AMD unveiled the next-generation Zen 5 CPU architecture and the XDNA 2 GPU NPU architecture, which will power the company’s third-generation Ryzen AI CPUs for ultrabooks and the brand-new AMD Ryzen 9000 series processors for gaming PCs, during the Computex 2024 event on Monday in Taipei, Taiwan.

With a dedicated NPU capable of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPs), AMD has unveiled its third-generation AI PC processors, enabling on-device AI experiences like recall (Copilot+), real-time translation, live captioning, and co-creation.

A 12-core central processing unit (CPU), a new graphics processing unit (GPU) based on RDNA 3.5 architecture with up to 16 compute units on the flagship AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, and an all-new XDNA 2 neural processing unit (NPU) with up to 50 TOPs of performance are all part of the Ryzen AI 300 series.

The next Copilot+ PCs, which demand a processor with a minimum AI performance of 40, will be powered by the Ryzen AI 9 365, which will provide the same AI performance but with 10 CPU cores.

With up to 50 TOPs, the latest Ryzen AI processor is more competent than the Qualcomm X Elite, the future Intel Lunar Lake AI processors, and the Apple M4. Its 16-bit instruction base eliminates the need for quantization.

Beginning in July 2024, more than 100 platform partners will offer laptops running the Ryzen AI 300 series processors, including MSI’s Copilot+ and AI+ models.

Based on the AM5 platform, the new Ryzen 9000 series of desktop CPUs offers up to 16 percent more instruction per core (IPC) than AMD Zen 4 processors while supporting technologies like PCIe 5.0 and DDR5.

The flagship Ryzen 9 9950X CPU, with 16 cores and 32 threads and a clock speed of up to 5.7 GHz, is part of the portfolio. Its thermal design power (TPD) is limited to 170W. The Ryzen 9 9950X is claimed to have a higher graphics bandwidth and AI acceleration capability than the Intel Core i9-14900K, with up to 56% better performance on benchmarks like Blender and up to 23% more frame rate when gaming.

The Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 9700X, and Ryzen 9600X are the three more SKUs that will be offered when the market opens in July 2024.

Additionally, AMD has unveiled the Ryzen 9 5900XT and Ryzen 7 5800XT, two new CPUs in the Ryzen 5000 series that will come with an AMD Wraith Prism Cooler.
