New Delhi: In a serious breach of national security, Haryana Police have arrested a construction supervisor in Ambala for allegedly spying for Pakistan and sharing sensitive defence-related information with foreign handlers. The arrest has raised concerns over security vulnerabilities in sensitive military zones, particularly amid growing threats from digital espionage and honey-trap operations.

Who Is the Accused?

The accused has been identified as Sunil Kumar, also known as Sunny, a resident of a village in Ambala district. He worked as a supervisor for a private construction company that was undertaking work inside Ambala Cantonment, a highly sensitive defence area housing key Indian Air Force and Army installations.

Due to his professional role, Sunil Kumar reportedly possessed a valid entry pass, allowing him access to restricted zones—an advantage investigators believe was misused for espionage activities.

How the Espionage Came to Light

According to police officials, the accused came under suspicion following intelligence inputs about suspicious online communications with Pakistan-based contacts. A preliminary investigation revealed that he had allegedly been trapped through social media platforms, where he was contacted by individuals posing as women.

Authorities believe these contacts were part of a Pakistan-linked intelligence module, which gradually gained his trust and persuaded him to share confidential information. The communication reportedly continued for several months before the matter came to the attention of Indian security agencies.

Information Allegedly Shared

During questioning, investigators recovered the accused’s mobile phone, which is now undergoing forensic examination. Initial findings suggest that Sunil Kumar may have shared photographs, videos, and details related to military movements, infrastructure layouts, and deployment patterns within the Ambala Cantonment area.

While officials have not disclosed the full extent of the information compromised, they have confirmed that the matter is being treated as a grave national security concern.

Legal Action and Charges

The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and the Indian Penal Code related to espionage and national security. He was produced before a local court, which granted police remand to allow investigators to probe deeper into the network and identify potential accomplices.

Security agencies are also examining whether the accused received financial incentives or other benefits in exchange for sharing sensitive information.

Rising Concern Over Honey-Trap Espionage

This case is part of a growing trend where foreign intelligence agencies allegedly use honey-trap tactics—often through fake social media profiles—to lure individuals with access to sensitive areas. Experts warn that civilians working in or around defence installations are increasingly being targeted due to their relatively easier access and lower suspicion levels.

Following the arrest, authorities are expected to review security protocols for civilians working in defence zones. This may include stricter background checks, limited access permissions, and increased monitoring of digital activity to prevent future breaches.

Officials have also urged citizens to exercise caution while interacting with unknown individuals online and to report suspicious approaches immediately to local authorities.

Police have stressed that the investigation is at a crucial stage, and further arrests cannot be ruled out. Agencies are working to trace the full communication trail, identify handlers, and assess the damage, if any, to national security.
