The Indian Railways has accelerated the construction of the Pamban Bridge, which will cost a total of 250 crore. Rameswaram is connected to the mainland in Tamil Nadu via the new 2.05 kilometre Pamban bridge near Mandapam. It will enable railways to run trains at quicker speeds, transport more cargo, and boost traffic volume between Pamban and Rameswaram. It will be 63 metres long and lift while remaining parallel to the deck, allowing access to the ships. While the current bridge uses ‘Scherzer’ rolling lift technology, in which the bridge opens horizontally to allow ships to pass through, the future ones will use sensors at each end to lift a 63-metre portion vertically upwards while remaining parallel to the deck.
