Excon 2022: Let’s go to work!

As the exhibition date approaches, there appears to be a lot of excitement among industry leaders, as well as visitors and the media. The eleventh edition of Excon 2022 is now available. This has been the largest trade show for the construction equipment and machinery industry since its inception. The organisers have improved the theme every two years, introducing several innovations and encouraging exhibitors to develop new technologies. The organisers, primarily the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), will hold the South Asia’s largest construction equipment and construction technology trade fair at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bengaluru from May 17 to 21, 2022.

This year’s Excon 2021 will place a greater emphasis on the alignment of its theme, “Building India for a New World – Competitiveness, Growth, Sustainability, and Technology.” Among the highlights are a special focus on alternative fuels, women in infrastructure, the AI pavilion, the finance plaza, as well as sustainability, MSMEs, and digital transformation.

“Excon 2021 is indeed going to be the first major exhibition for the construction equipment industry, post-pandemic, so expectations are high,” says Deepak Shetty, CEO & MD, JCB India, and chairman of Excon. There will almost certainly be even more active participation from the industry than in previous editions. We expect over 1,000 exhibitors from India and abroad, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Singapore, and Sri Lanka.”

Over 50,000 business visitors from around the world are expected to attend the 5-day exhibition (17-21 May 2022), where they will be able to see firsthand the latest construction equipment and components, as well as world-class technologies that enable rapid implementation of infrastructure projects.

“The theme of Building India for a New World focuses on sustainable infrastructure development, and thus the focus will be on newer technologies that will take the place of traditional technologies to improve efficiency in construction activities,” says Dimitrov Krishnan, co-chairman, Excon 2021 & president, ICEMA, and MD, Volvo CE India. In order to promote sustainability, we must also consider the climate impact of introducing cleaner engine technology and alternative fuels. Additionally, this year at Excon, we are focusing on the CE sector’s growth. While infrastructure development is already underway, we must begin planning for increased demand in the coming years. This will ensure that the industry not only expands in size, but also creates scale opportunities for both India and machine and component exports. India will be the world’s second largest market for CE by 2030. We need a lot of money to invest in critical high-precision hydraulic components, and then we need scale. We will focus on developing local capabilities and increasing supply at this exhibition.”

According to TR Bharathan, member of the Excon 2021 Steering Committee and chief adviser of Puzzolana Group, the exhibition will provide a platform for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to showcase new technologies while also helping to bridge the gap between government and private players. He was speaking at the Infra Dialogue: Progressive Andhra Pradesh – State Reforms, Opportunities, and the Way Forward and Excon roadshow’s inaugural session. He claimed that the Union government’s Gati Shakti initiative would provide OEMs and infrastructure companies with a plethora of opportunities. The seven engines of growth proposed by Gati Shakti, such as roads, ports, and railways, would all be integrated.

BKT, a local company, has been developing all-steel radial tyres and has already released the 57″ model. The 63″ tyres will be available soon from the company. This is a proud moment for the company because these types of tyres are not manufactured in India. “We are proud that our Earthmax SR series has found popularity among large dump trucks and construction equipment makers,” says Rajiv Poddar, joint MD of BKT. At our newly expanded Bhuj plant, we recently rolled out the first radial agricultural tyre. Within six months, this new 12-acre plant will reach its full manufacturing capacity of 50.000mt. We plan to display our current tyre line at Excon and will reveal more at the show.”

Greenfield business opportunity The Arx G3200 motor grader (310 hp, 32 tonne); Arx G1000 motor grader (120 hp, 11 tonne); Arx G3300 blasthole drill (6-8″); and Arx S1200 Dust Suppression Sprayer are four new machines from Arx Mining & Construction Equipment. “Arx has also procured the IP rights to design, modify, and manufacture the Indital range of products from Kalmar – Cargotec Group, Finland,” says Amarnath Ramachandran, MD, Arx Mining & Construction Equipment. Six large forklifts (10 to 35 tonnes), two empty container lift trucks (adaptations of 12 and 16 tonne forklifts), one empty container reach stacker (8 tonnes), and one fully loaded reach stacker model are included. Apart from that, we’re developing a brake-by-wire system to connect the brakes to a computer.

India has been investing heavily in infrastructure across segments. The government is looking at catching up very fast when it comes to the gap in infrastructure. The speed and output of the machines is becoming bigger because projects are demanding more powerful work. Then we have to look at skilling the people and make them capable of operating these heavy machines.

The rate of construction of national highways has increased tremendously in the last five years. As on date, 37km of highways are being constructed per day and the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari wants to increase it to 100km a day. The timelines for completion of projects were being reduced drastically and in these circumstances high quality, high capacity equipments like excavators, graders and dumpers would be required.

The major difference in Indian roads compared to those of the developed countries is that 94% of the roads In India are small and medium (rural and district) whereas these percentages in developed countries are usually less than 30%. Further development of roads will be more of a case of upgrading/development rather than a new construction, according to Mahindra.

India needs to adopt more mechanisation in infrastructure and construction, create sustainable demand for advanced equipment in major projects, and become more tech-friendly by adopting IoT, robotics, etc. The Indian government has announced some big structural reforms in the recent past such as the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP) and establishment of NaBFID for infrastructure financing and development.
