Consider a country where traffic jams at shipping ports are a thing of the past and trains glide into industrial hubs with surgical accuracy. This is not some distant dream; it is the blueprint for a New India. The PM GatiShakti National Master Plan is currently overseeing a major overhaul of the country’s physical landscape.
The Network Planning Group (NPG) recently completed a massive milestone by evaluating 352 major infrastructure projects. The sheer scale is staggering—these projects cost a total of Rs 16.10 lakh crore. This is more than just spending money; it’s about creating a smarter, faster, and more connected Bharat.

The Power of Integrated Planning
For decades, India’s infrastructure development has suffered from “siloed” planning. One department would construct a road, only for another to dig it up for pipelines several weeks later. PM GatiShakti changes the game by consolidating 57 Central Ministries and all States onto a single digital platform.
The NPG serves as this operation’s brain. It requires that every new bridge, railway line, or port be designed with “multimodality” in mind. This includes ensuring that a highway does not end abruptly but instead connects seamlessly to a railway station or an airport.
Breaking Down the Numbers
The breakdown of the 352 evaluated projects reveals where India’s growth is most concentrated. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways leads the pack with 164 projects totalling approximately Rs 8.61 lakh crore. The Ministry of Railways follows closely, with 137 projects worth Rs 4.22 lakh crore.
Other key sectors include Housing and Urban Affairs, which is responsible for 23 projects. This master grid includes specialised sectors such as petroleum and natural gas, ports, and civil aviation. Of the total evaluated, 201 projects have already been sanctioned, with 167 currently in active implementation.
Empowering the States
Infrastructure is not just a central issue; the spirit of “Sabka Prayas” pervades all states. To fuel this, the Ministry of Finance has provided states with Rs 5,000 crore in interest-free loans for 50 years. This funding is specifically for GatiShakti-related projects.
States such as West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar have emerged as frontrunners in utilising these resources. The central government helps states build last-mile connectivity, ensuring that even the most remote industrial clusters can efficiently reach global markets.
Monitoring with Digital Precision
The true challenge lies in execution, as planning is only half the battle. The government launched the PAIMANA portal to track projects costing more than Rs 150 crore. This digital watchdog monitors cost overruns and delays in real time, ensuring accountability.
For large projects exceeding Rs 500 crore, a special Project Monitoring Group (PMG) employs a five-tier escalation system. If a project encounters a bureaucratic roadblock, it can be escalated all the way to the PRAGATI forum, which is chaired by the Prime Minister himself, to ensure a timely resolution.
Slashing Logistics Costs
The ultimate goal of this Rs 16.10 lakh crore investment is to raise the global competitiveness of “Made in India” products. Currently, India’s logistics costs have fallen to around 7.97% of GDP, a significant improvement over previous years. The goal is to achieve the global benchmark of 8%.
PM GatiShakti is directly benefiting the economy by reducing the time and cost of transporting goods from a Haryana factory to a Gujarat port. It generates a “multiplier effect”: better roads lead to more factories, which lead to more jobs and greater prosperity for all.
A Greener and Faster Transit
These 352 projects incorporate sustainable practices. There is a strong emphasis on moving goods from carbon-intensive road transport to more efficient rail and water routes. New dedicated freight corridors and ‘Energy Corridors’ are being developed to transport coal, cement and minerals without clogging passenger lines.
This shift not only saves money, but it also significantly reduces the carbon footprint of the nation’s logistics. As India strives to become a $5 trillion economy, the Network Planning Group’s efforts ensure that the foundation is not only strong, but also future-ready.
