OpenAI confirmed to power generative AI features on iOS 18, Google still in the reckoning: Report
It has been rumoured that OpenAI is powering the generative AI features on iOS 18, however Google is still a contender and might be used to offer an alternative.

It appears that Apple has finally made up its mind to use OpenAI’s technology to power the AI capabilities in iOS 18, the iPhone software update that will be released at the WWDC 2024 event the following month. A recent report by Mark Gurnman of Bloomberg has corroborated the revelation, stating that the agreement with OpenAI may play a significant role in WWDC.

According to the Bloomberg story, Apple is still attempting to reach an agreement with Google so that Gemini can be offered as a substitute. Notably, when the new functionalities are released with iOS 18, Apple’s enormous user base will position it as one of the major players in AI.

Furthermore, by continuing to work with OpenAI as a partner on iOS 18’s AI capabilities, the business will probably have an advantage over Samsung, which depends entirely on Google’s Gemini AI to power certain of the advanced features on its Galaxy S24 lineup.

Gurnman said the new features might initially be offered as a sneak peek in the iOS 18 developer beta, and the company might release a stable version of these features alongside the iPhone 16 in September.

What distinguishes Apple’s AI features from those of Google and Samsung?

At the WWDC event in June, Apple is probably going to unveil a number of AI technologies, such as enhanced Siri functionality, faster search results, and the ability to transcribe notes and photographs.

In addition to iOS 18, Gurnman noted that Apple is probably going to add AI capabilities to macOS and iPadOS. These operating systems will all contain software that can decide whether a given activity should be executed locally or remotely.

‘On-device’ AI has several clear benefits, such as enhanced privacy, off-line operation or in locations with inadequate internet access, and faster response times. On-device large language models (LLMs) are, however, frequently less intelligent or potent since they are not supported by massive servers with billions of parameters, which are the brains behind the majority of commercial chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini.

Apple may find it difficult to uphold its reputation as a privacy-focused organisation given that it is also likely utilising a cloud-based LLM for its iOS 18 AI features. According to Gurnman, Apple will probably emphasise that it won’t be creating user profiles similar to those of Google or Meta in order to address this problem.
