The Indian government and the Asian Development Bank have agreed to a $181 million loan to enhance urban livability and mobility in Ahmedabad’s peri-urban areas in Gujarat, with the agreement signed by Juhi Mukherjee and Shri Rajesh Vasudevan.
Mukherjee and Vasudevan emphasized the project’s objectives to improve peri-urban areas with robust infrastructure, a vibrant economy, and improved urban services, while managing urban sprawl and expanding transport connectivity for migrant populations.
The project aims to enhance urban services and governance for the urban poor, women, and migrant workers by constructing water distribution networks, stormwater drainage, sewerage systems, sewage treatment plants, and improving junctions along the Sardar Patel Ring Road.
ADB plans to enhance capacity in technology-based urban planning, climate change resilience, and disaster management, promoting environmental and social safeguards, gender equality, and social inclusion.
The capacity building initiatives will focus on financial planning, revenue enhancement, infrastructure asset operations, and community awareness programs for water conservation, health, and hygiene.
