Year-End Review 2024: Progress Under PMAY-G and PMGSY

India’s PMAY-G and PMGSY programs have significantly improved rural housing and connectivity, achieving significant milestones.

Gramin’s Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (PMAY-G):

1. The PMAY-G program’s “Housing for All” goal is to build 2.95 crore pucca homes with essential facilities in rural regions by 2024.
2. Progress: As of December 30, 2024, 2.68 crore homes had been finished out of the 3.33 crore total target, of which 3.22 crore had been approved.
3. Future Plans: Additional 2 crore rural dwellings will be developed between FY 2024-25 and FY 2028-29 under the enhanced program, approved in August 2024.

PMGSY, or Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana:

Since its inception, 1,62,742 households have received connectivity, including 242 in 2024. In 2024, 19,606 km of road and 3,489 bridges were constructed, with PMGSY-IV launched in September 2024 to connect 25,000 unconnected habitations using green technologies.

Monetary investments:

Since its inception, India has spent ₹3,30,891 crore on rural infrastructure development, aiming to drive socio-economic transformation by providing housing, improved connectivity, and essential services.

Year-End Review 2024: Progress Under PMAY-G and PMGSY

As 2024 comes to a close, the government has made significant strides in implementing key rural development schemes, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), aimed at improving the lives of rural residents across India. Both initiatives focus on enhancing infrastructure and promoting sustainable development in rural areas.

Progress Under PMAY-G (Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin)

PMAY-G, launched with the vision of providing affordable housing for the rural poor, has made remarkable progress in 2024. The year witnessed the construction of a significant number of rural houses, with a focus on providing pucca houses with basic amenities like toilets, electricity, and water supply.

  • Housing Targets: As of 2024, over 2 crore houses have been completed under PMAY-G, with more than 80 lakh houses constructed in the last year alone.
  • Beneficiaries: The scheme has especially benefited marginalized groups, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and economically weaker sections (EWS), with a large portion of the housing constructed for women-headed households.
  • Technological Integration: A key feature of the progress in 2024 was the adoption of digital platforms for transparency and tracking of construction progress, ensuring timely delivery and accountability.
  • Sustainability: Many of the houses constructed under PMAY-G are designed to be climate-resilient and incorporate eco-friendly materials, contributing to the government’s green housing initiative.

Progress Under PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana)

PMGSY aims to provide all-weather rural roads to connect remote villages and enhance connectivity for economic growth. In 2024, PMGSY has significantly contributed to improving rural infrastructure by linking previously isolated areas to larger markets and urban centers.

  • Road Construction: In 2024, over 50,000 kilometers of rural roads were constructed or upgraded under PMGSY. The expansion of road networks has led to better access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for rural populations.
  • Focus on Connectivity: The year also saw a renewed push to connect the most remote villages in hilly, tribal, and flood-prone areas, making them more accessible to vital services.
  • Enhanced Rural Mobility: The improved road network has also boosted trade and commerce, helping local farmers and small businesses transport goods more easily and at lower costs.
